A culturally rich, east Dearborn neighborhood
Colson Ruby's central location and cultural richness make it highly sought-after. Located on the east side of Dearborn, it's at the heart of the Arab Capital of America—both in location and feel. Slightly larger houses and suburban features attract buyers who want to move up from the South End but stay close to family, friends and familiar establishments.
"There's kind of a migration from all of the families that came into America, and they found their first home in the South End, and then as they have they've done better, they've kind of started migrating out," says Michael Phillips, owner of Keller Williams Legacy and lifelong Dearborn resident. Due to this migration, most residents of Colson Ruby are of Middle Eastern and North African descent, which is reflected in the surrounding restaurants, houses of worship, landmarks and more.
Diverse shopping on Schafer and Michigan Avenues
Neighborhood stores and restaurants cater to Colson Ruby's diverse population. Dearborn Fresh Supermarket is well-known for its selection of fresh, never-frozen meat. Thanks to its relationships with livestock farmers, its team of butchers sells fresh, halal meat daily. Shoppers can find homemade breads, pastries and Middle Eastern desserts at its bakery.
"[Dearborn Fresh Supermarket] is different because it was one of the first that took the size of like a Kroger, and then it brought in all of the Middle Eastern communities' brands," Phillips says. "You know, the types of olives and cheeses and halal meats and bread, and all the ingredients that are used in the Middle Eastern cooking."
The market sits off Schafer Road, which has grown into a primary shopping district and borders the neighborhood to the east. Michigan Avenue borders it to the south and has more shopping and dining options, including Haraz Coffee House, a popular local chain known for its broad pastry selection and Yemeni coffee. Like most coffee shops in Dearborn, Haraz is a go-to hangout spot open until 11 p.m., seven days a week. Ford Road borders Colson Ruby to the north and is home to big box stores like Walmart and Best Buy.
Various mid-priced brick houses
Brick bungalows, two-family flats and colonial-style homes line the narrow streets of Colson Ruby. Most houses were built in the 1930s and housed the earliest Ford factory workers, but there are also newer constructions spread throughout. Lots are on the smaller side at just 4,300 square feet, so front and back yard maintenance proves simple for most. Houses in Colson Ruby generally sell for between $200,000 and $500,000 and, on average, sell in less than 20 days on the market, less than half the national average. Like most neighborhoods in east Dearborn, street flooding due to older infrastructure is an issue for many.
Walkability, Ford Road, Michigan Ave and I-94
Colson Ruby is a walkable neighborhood with shops, schools and parks within walking distance for most residents. Three mosques and three churches are within a mile as well. Ford Road borders this community to the north and Michigan Avenue to the south, both connecting with Interstate 94 for longer commutes. Michigan Avenue and Schaefer Road feature bus stops for numerous SMART Bus routes into Detroit and around Dearborn, and I-94 puts Detroit Metropolitan Airport a 12-mile drive southwest. Henry Ford Medical Center – Fairlane is the nearest 24-hour medical facility, about 3 miles west of Colson Ruby.
Miller Elementary, Woodworth Middle and Fordson High
Kids can attend the B-minus-rated Miller Elementary School just south of Colson Ruby. Woodworth Middle School has a C rating and is two blocks west of the neighborhood. Older teens attend Fordson High School, which has a B rating. Out of nearly 750 public high schools in Wayne County, Fordson ranks in the top 25. Constructed in the 1920s to mimic the likes of Oxford University, its distinct architecture and intricate details make it one of metro Detroit's most architecturally significant schools. All Dearborn Public Schools accommodate their student population with halal meals and student-led prayers.
Argle-Williamson Park and Ford Woods
Argle-Williamson Park is at the center of the neighborhood and features a playground and shaded picnic areas. Residents can also visit the nearby Ford Woods, which has a baseball field, tennis courts, swimming pool and water park.
Dearborn Homecoming
Residents are a 10-minute drive from Ford Field Park, site of the annual Dearborn Homecoming Festival. The three-day event, held every summer, features live music, carnival rides, food vendors and a fireworks display. Closer to home, the Arab American National Museum sits at the southeastern end of the neighborhood and has regular events highlighting Arab American art, food, and culture.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
