A neighborhood built by the Ford Motor Company
Deeply steeped in the history of America’s automotive industry, the Ford Homes Historic District is one product of Henry Ford’s many efforts to provide his company’s workers with housing. Designed by architect Albert Wood, architect of Henry Ford Hospital, the neighborhood started in 1920 and has since become one of Motor City’s most historic neighborhoods. “We have a huge sense of community here,” says Erin Keem, treasurer of the Ford Homes Historic District. As residents of the district for more than 30 years, Keem and her husband have watched the neighborhood become what it is today. “The neighborhood is geared towards growing families but also has a lot of established residents and retirees,” she says. “It’s kind of a mixed bag, and we host new neighbor meet-and-greets to make sure everyone can get to know each other better.”
Cottages and Tudors from the 1920s
Antique cars can be seen on display at almost every turn, sidewalks and bike lanes allow for an enjoyable stroll or ride, and nearby Ford Road provides easy access to public transportation. “There’s a lot of character,” says Ali Khalil, Realtor with Remax Team 2000. “The city has protected the character of the homes and they don’t allow too many major renovations.” Streets are decorated with mature trees and lined with early 20th-century homes, manicured lawns and neatly trimmed hedges. Stunning Tudors dominate the landscape and sport shuttered windows and front-gabled roofs. Many corner lots hold spacious cottage-style homes and provide larger yard space than other Detroit neighborhoods. Because the homes are kept in good condition, Khalil says home values remain steady. Depending on housing style and size, prices in the area can range from $125,000s to $300,000. The median home price is $275,000, up 24% from the previous year.

Grocery stores and retail shopping are scattered about the neighborhood, all within walking distance. Westborn Market on Michigan Avenue and Dearborn Farm Market on Monroe Street are popular local spots for fresh produce and other essentials. Mati’s Deli on Monroe Street sells sliced deli meats, soups, salads and sandwiches, and Monroe Bakery offers various pastries and desserts. Residents can head to nearby Michigan Avenue for retail options like K&G Fashion Superstore and Village Antiques.

A beloved neighborhood cornerstone, the renowned Henry Ford Museum showcases the area’s rich automotive heritage, while the Automotive Hall of Fame pays homage to monumental contributions to the industry. Adjacent to the museum is Greenfield Village, which takes you on a journey back in time with its historic buildings and reenactments. “People come from all over the world to see Greenfield Village,” Khalil says. “There’s a lot of history here.” On weekends, several cultural events and festivals are hosted at the nearby Dearborn Arts Council. “We do a lot of things to encourage interaction among neighbors, especially the families with young children, like our Halloween Walk, Christmas events and Easter Egg Hunt,” Keem says. “One of the streets has a block party every September just so neighbors can get out of the house and have fun with each other.”
Michigan Emmy Award-winning film at Dearborn High School
Within the neighborhood, students can attend Duvall Elementary School from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade before moving on to Stout Middle School. Dearborn High School hosts the state's only secondary student-produced film program, which has received several Michigan Emmy Awards. Duvall and Dearborn earn B-plus grades on Niche, while Stout earns a B-minus.

Residents enjoy the small, wooded Thomas A. Edison Park, where children enjoy the playgrounds, swing sets and baseball diamond regularly used for T-ball and Little League baseball. Keem says, “We have a small pocket park at the end of Haigh Street that we use for small special events and meet-and-greets where first responders come out to build a rapport with residents.” For outdoor recreation, the Rouge River Gateway Trail is nearby for scenic walks and bike rides along the picturesque riverbanks.

Getting around on Michigan Avenue
Michigan Avenue and South Telegraph Road are the neighborhood’s largest local thoroughfares, and Interstate 94 is just 2 miles south. Drivers can follow Michigan Avenue 12 miles east to reach downtown Detroit. The neighborhood streets are also lined with sidewalks, and residents can access the Detroit public bus system through stops along Michigan Avenue.
