Delano Park
Older homes next to Delano Park
Delano Park mainly consists of bungalow and ranch-style homes, although newer construction is slowly beginning to be built. There are some sidewalks through the neighborhood and homes have driveways with carports or attached garages. There is a little street parking in homes that have shorter driveways and either no garages or some carports. “Houses that border the park are very similar to the historic district, but you live there without paying the historic fee,” says Smith. “They’re not considered historic, but they are old and well-kept.” Bungalows are generally the oldest homes, built primarily in the 1940s and 50s and can range in price from $120,000 to $250,000. Ranch-style homes can range from $169,000 to $340,000 and New Traditional homes will be the highest priced, ranging from $315,000 to $444,931. There’s a mixture of mature trees and smaller landscaping in front yards.Within walking distance to Decatur schools
All three schools that students are zoned for sit within Delano Park. Students can begin schooling at Oak Park Elementary School, which is graded a B-minus by Niche. Decatur Middle School earns a B and offers a variety of extracurricular classes such as robotics. The middle and high school are across the street from each other. Decatur High School earns an A-minus and, along with Austin High School, offers 19 Advanced Placement courses to students. According to Niche, Decatur High School is the second best public high school in Morgan County.Nearby highway and a hospital within Delano Park
There is no public transportation in Decatur, but U.S. Highway 31 acts as the border of Delano Park. The Decatur Morgan Hospital sits within Delano Park. With the three schools and a hospital within Delano Park, traffic can be “a mess in that area,” Smith says.Oldest city park with a rose garden and a park along the Tennessee River
Delano Park is the oldest in the city, first created in 1887. The park is home to classic park offerings like a playground, walking paths and athletic fields. The park’s Rose Garden was originally planted in 1934. “Right now it’s something that the city is trying to make better,” Smith says. To the south of the neighborhood is Pop Oliver Park, a smaller green space with a playground and tennis court. Point Mallard Park sits along the Tennessee River and covers over 700 acres. The park has an 18-hole course, 217 full hookup camping sites, and a seasonal waterpark. The area also has a variety of athletic fields.Thrift store next to GraceLife Church and shopping along the highway
Within GraceLife Church is Everyday Sunshine Thrift Store, which employs people with intellectual disabilities. “Downtown specifically, that’s where all your local restaurants and businesses will be,” says Smith. “If you’d have to ask me for a recommendation now, I’d say 609 Social Market.” 609 Social Market & Provisions serves fresh seafood and has a small seafood market within the restaurant. Along U.S. Highway 31 are a variety of chain businesses, including O’Reilly Auto Parts, McDonald’s and Subways. In the Decatur Shopping Center is a Dollar General, Cornerstone Furniture, Value Village and Amazing Deals & Bin Treasures. La Guerrerense is a general Mexican store, and a Walmart Neighborhood Market is nearby.Downtown events with food trucks
Decatur has several city events throughout the year, including a Downtown Christmas Open House. “Businesses throw out their Christmas line of decorations,” says Smith. “Our office has photos with the Grinch. It’s really just a fun night of launching Christmas downtown.” From April to October, the city hosts 3rd Friday. “The cities shut down downtown and there’s food trucks, music,” says Smith. “People can walk up and down, there are lots of dogs out.” Point Mallard Park hosts the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic over Memorial weekend.
