However, locals are only a 6-mile drive from Athens, while Decatur is just 10 miles south. Route 31 serves as the thoroughfare between the towns. Huntsville, Alabama's largest city, is also roughly 25 miles east, accessible via Interstate 565 on Tanner's southside.
