Academics shaped this historic Decatur neighborhood
College Heights got its shape from the railroad that once ran down South Candler Street and its name from historic Agnes Scott College. Alongside Oakhurst and McDonough-Adams-Kings, College Heights is one of the longest-standing neighborhoods in Decatur. Its Craftsman homes and proximity to downtown have added to its appeal. The city’s school district is among the top school systems in Georgia, making academics a core part of the community’s identity along with Agnes Scott and nearby Emory University. “A lot of these areas were places college faculty were living in the ‘60s and ‘70s,” says Frank Golley, who has lived in Decatur for 40 years and is the owner of Golley Realty Group. “The people who created the personality of the neighborhood were involved in academics.”
Murals painted by local artists are found all throughout the College Heights community.

College Heights’ post-war homes and new construction
College Heights has classic Craftsman cottages, bungalows, simple ranch-style homes from the 1930s and 1960s, and some new builds. “There’s a lot of old Craftsmans in the area, and then small ranches from the post-war period,” Golley says. “Now, for the past 20 years, we’ve had teardowns and built big fancy houses, very nice and upscale.” These midcentury properties are directly on the main street and surrounded by wide sidewalks and compact front yards. Bungalows, ranch styles and cottages typically cost between $400,000 and $800,000, while single-family Craftsmans and new-traditional styles range from $1 million to $1.5 million.
