Downtown Decatur is a hip and historic place to call home
Six miles east of Atlanta, the city of Decatur has its own hip downtown. Juli St George uses the adjectives charming and thriving to describe the area. "If you're looking for a cool gift, it's a great place [to find one]. The kids all walk to school — neighbors hang out with each other. You may even see sightings of famous musicians. The Indigo Girls' Emily Salier lives there," she says. Reflections of the past are evident at the neighborhood's heart, Decatur Square, which is surrounded by around 150 restaurants and locally owned boutiques and businesses. The square is built around the Historic DeKalb Courthouse, established in the early 19th century and a museum devoted to the city's history. Sycamore Street also showcases Decatur's deep roots with some of its oldest homes.

Eddie's Attic spotlights local talent
The arts are alive downtown and in the city as a whole. Creatives are celebrated in the streets at the Decatur Arts Festival in the spring. Come fall, the Pan African Festival and Salsa is held on the square. Eddie's Attic has been a popular live music venue since the early 1990s. It hosts a weekly open mic night competition for local and regional songwriters, earning them slots in the Bi-Annual Songwriter's Open-Mic Shootout. A famous winner of the shootout was John Mayer. Just south, in the neighboring community of Oakhurst, Porchfest brings local musicians out onto their front stoops, lawns and driveways to play.
The holidays are also big here. In December, downtown Decatur’s old-fashioned streetlights are decorated with wreaths. The square displays a large, twinkling tree and a menorah, and it hosts a marshmallow roast. “And you should see Halloween,” St George says, adding that tons of kids dress up and go out.

Eclectic eats and local shopping surrounding Decatur Square
Pole banners, murals and store window artwork create a colorful backdrop on walks through downtown Decatur. There's an assortment of international cuisine surrounding the square, representing a seemingly endless variety, from Italian to French, Spanish, New American, Irish and Southern comfort food. Pamela Hughes, a Realtor of over 40 years with Harry Norman Realtors, notes that Taqueria del Sol is among the most popular spots. "The line starts at 5 o'clock, and it goes out to the street," she says. Local shops are equally diverse, including the women’s clothing store Tres Jolie, the rocking chair boutique Tall Rocker Company, the quaint bookstore Little Shop of Stories and Odd Bird Gifts. Kelly's Market is the neighborhood grocer but Kroger, Walmart Supercenter and the DeKalb Farmers Market are within 3 miles. The market sells produce and pantry staples from over 200 countries and has over 500 varieties of cheese and dairy alone. “There are things there that I haven't seen since traveling through India in the '90s,” St George says.

Downtown Decatur's condos and vintage homes
Decatur's connection to Atlanta runs as deep as its gridded, tree-lined streets, which were built along trolley lines that once connected both cities.
Properties immediately surrounding the square are condos, some perched above stores, priced from the high $200,000s to the mid-$500,000s. Most come with community pools and fitness rooms; many are in gated communities. There's also a selection of townhouses in the mid- to high $500,000s. Vintage properties settle along the fringes of downtown Decatur — from the 19th-century neoclassical homes and Victorians on Sycamore Street to the Craftsman bungalows on Church Street. A modest home could begin in the $400,000s, but most range from the $600,000s to the $800,000s, with some heading toward $1 million.

Students may attend Clairemont Elementary School, Beacon Hill Middle School and Decatur High School. All earn A ratings on Niche and Decatur High is particularly convenient, as it’s in the neighborhood. While Emory University is less than 2 miles northwest, the historic women’s university, Agnes Scott College, is right in town.
