Oakhurst is a bustling Decatur neighborhood with community pride and well-liked amenities
The Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur used to be its own city. It was incorporated in 1910 as a suburb along the North Decatur trolley line before being annexed in 1914. In more than a century since then, the community has kept a sense of identity, becoming known for its distinct events and a feeling of togetherness. At the same time, several shops and restaurants sit close enough to reach via sidewalks, and the area has highly rated schools. “People love this community,” says Natalie Williams, a Realtor and associate broker with Keller Knapp Realty. “It’s almost like a team sport. You will see residents with the Oakhurst flag hanging off their cars.”
The lush tree canopy of Oakhurst stretches across the horizon, with charming homes nestled beneath and the distant cityscape offering a reminder of the neighborhood’s close-knit feel and urban convenience.
The residents of Oakhurst enthusiastically showcase flags that symbolize their deep pride and strong sense of community, fluttering in the gentle breeze and adding a splash of color to the neighborhood as they come together to celebrate their shared identity.

Craftsman bungalows, townhomes and a midcentury modern influence
Oakhurst is known for its Craftsman bungalows. These homes, often featuring brick exteriors and several pillars in the front, can range from $600,000 to $1 million. A handful of townhouses are available, often from $600,000 to $800,000. The community also has several midcentury modern-influenced residences built in the last few years, which typically have five bedrooms and four or more bathrooms. These can range from $1 million to $2 million. "It’s not much more expensive than other neighborhoods,” Williams says. “Anything in Decatur will fetch a handsome price. The difference is that homes in Oakhurst will get five or six offers on them, which is more than other places.” While Oakhurst does not have a homeowners association, the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association plans events and communicates with local officials to make sure the area is well-maintained. The community is pedestrian friendly, with most streets having sidewalks that residents use to get to parks and restaurants. Oaks and other tall trees tower over the roads, and many lawns have bushes or flowers to admire.

While severe weather can affect the area, it is not something residents worry about. “We’ll do some tornado drills here, but it’s not like Florida or other East Coast communities,” Williams says. “We haven’t had any flooding since I’ve been here. Maybe some trees will fall, but that happens a lot of places.”
