The educational roots of the Winnona Park Historic District

The Winnona Park Historic District was built by its educational foundation. Not only did businessman George Scott start developing the area shortly after founding Agnes Scott College in 1889, but the Winnona Park Elementary School and playground were also established at the center of the community. Today, both institutions continue to serve students of many ages while local architecture and landmarks gives the area its unique charm and identity. With high-value homes, local shopping and plenty of parks nearby, the Winnona Park Historic District paints a picture of what the community looked like during the 20th century.

From Winnona to Dearborn Park

Besides its namesake park, there are many more green spaces to be had both within and outside the neighborhood. The 77-acre Decatur Legacy Park is on the east side and has a pond and a community garden, while Dearborn Park sits to the west and has nature trails, a little library and a playground. The Decatur Recreation Center is to the north past East College Avenue and has an indoor basketball gymnasium, a dance studio and tennis courts in Scott Park.

The modern-style apartments found at 1133 on the Square range between $1,300 and $5,700 a month, while condos and townhomes will cost around $300,000 to $600,000. Many Craftsman bungalows, Georgian Revival and English Country homes will have quarter-acre lots and 3-5 bedrooms, ranging from $600,000 to $1 million. Street eats by East College Avenue

In the 1920s, most of the small storefronts on the northern end consisted of a pharmacy, a hot dog stand and a barbershop. Today, retail is much more built out with several restaurants, boutiques and art galleries along the avenue. Calle Latina is a local Latin street food joint with a patio, while Three Taverns is a local microbrewery that offers Prosper House pizza Wednesdays through Sundays. Cremalosa serves its own handmade gelato alongside coffee and pastries, and Publix is the closest grocery store 2 miles north.

The educational pathway to Agnes State College

Winnona Park Elementary is an expeditionary learning school with a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio, while Beacon Hill Middle is an International Baccalaureate World School. The educational pathway ends at Decatur High School, which offers technical education through its career academy. All three schools earned A ratings on Niche. After graduating, many women in the community will continue their learning a mile west at the all-girls Agnes State College, which earned a B. A Waldorf school is also available on the east end.
