Camelot
Suburban Neighborhood in Decatur, Illinois
Macon County 62526
Leafy streets and apartment living
Bi-level homes, ranch-style houses and the occasional bungalow line Camelot's wide, leafy streets. Towering trees offer much-needed shade during warmer months and pepper lawns with bright red-and-orange leaves in fall. Homes sit snugly beside one another, so some homeowners add chain link fences around their yards to create extra cushion. A majority of homes sell between $70,000 and $80,000, but houses in the $90,000 to $110,000 range also make it onto the market. A few condominiums and a sizable apartment complex are in the neighborhood's southern half.Soccer leagues at Midstate Soccer Academy
Since the neighborhood is quite small, there are no parks near homes. However, East Mound Park is 1 mile west and offers 39 acres of green space for a picnic or a pickup soccer game. Those looking for an organized team to play with head to Midstate Soccer Academy, which has multiple fields next to the park. One mile southeast, Knights of Columbus Park offers a small unshaded playground, a covered picnic shelter and 7 acres of lawn to lounge or run around on.Zoned for Argenta-Oreana school district
Although located in Decatur, students are zoned for the Argenta-Oreana Community Unit School District. "Most people buy there because of the school district," says Plain. "They like that it has a small-town school feel. Plus, if they want to get into that school district while still living in Decatur but their price point for a home is a bit lower, Camelot is their best bet." Students attend Argenta-Oreana Elementary School, which has a B-minus Niche grade, followed by the C-rated Argenta-Oreana Middle School. Older students attend Argenta-Oreana High School, which has a C-plus rating and frequent college and career information sessions. Students exploring potential careers can connect with representatives from the Midwest Technical Institute, the University of Illinois Springfield, the U.S. Army and more.Sharing space with Decatur Corrections Center
A prominent feature of the neighborhood is that it houses the Decatur Corrections Center. Most residents hold neutral opinions on its presence, with Plain saying, "I've never had anyone complain about it. It's just a part of the neighborhood, and people accept that it's just there." Camelot is also near multiple major employers. Residents are within 2 miles of ADM, Caterpillar and various City of Decatur public works buildings.Taking I-72 to larger cities
Illinois State Route 48 is the closest major road to the neighborhood at 1 mile away. Plain says that locals' primary use for Route 48 is to reach Interstate 72, which connects to larger cities like Springfield, Bloomington and Champaign. The closest onramp sits less than 3 miles northeast of Camelot. Public bus stops are available along East Mound Road, and the Decatur Airport is roughly 8 miles southeast.Sweets and snacks at The Cravings Corner
The closest stores and restaurants are in the Moundford Plaza Shopping Center, less than 1 mile away. The Cravings Corner welcomes the peckish with its brightly colored geometric interior and an extensive menu of sweet treats and handheld snacks. Thirsty's Speakeasy is a laidback spot for casual American fare, while Debbie's Video Gaming Café lets locals play slots at their leisure. Circle K and IN and OUT Convenience Store serve everyday needs. Half a mile to the south are a few more restaurant options, and brand names like Walmart and Sam's Club are 2 miles west.
