Devonshire
Suburban Neighborhood in Decatur, Illinois
Macon County 62521
Yards that stretch and stretch
A community primarily built in the 1960s, Devonshire architecture is indicative of the time: split-levels and ranch-style homes are dominant with bungalows scattered throughout. Being farther away from the city center means lots grow larger, with most homes having half an acre. Depending on where homes are in the neighborhood, space between neighbors might diminish, but front and back yards still sprawl out from properties. Lawns are kept trim, featuring very few flourishes other than an occasional chain link fence or towering tree. Driveways lead down to wide streets that remain unbuffered by curbs or sidewalks. Across the board, properties cost between $100,000 and $200,000, with the median price around $145,000. Sometimes prices dip below $100,000, somewhere in the $70,000 to $95,000 range.Weekend tournaments on the ball fields
While no green spaces are inside Devonshire, many are within 2 miles. Rotary Park acts as a primary sports center for the area. Throughout the week, rec leagues play on the park's five lighted baseball fields and four volleyball pits. The park also has a playground and a concession for weekend tournaments. Beside the park roll the undulating fairways of Red Tail Run Golf Club. This public course caters to all skill levels and offers golf academy programming in addition to regular tee times. Northeast of the neighborhood is South Shores Park, situated next to South Shores Elementary School. It is a popular play area during school hours and after. Mullinix says, "The school district actually funded the park's recent renovations. They've just finished up a $100,000 playground that's much safer and more accessible."Split between Decatur and Meridian Community school districts
Because the neighborhood is on Decatur's outskirts, students are split between two school districts: Decatur Public Schools and Meridian Community Unit School District 15. Students in the Decatur District attend South Shores Elementary School, roughly half a mile to the north. Kristi Mullinix, principal at South Shores, says that the school is a very tight-knit community. "We're not a huge school," she says. "We have about 300 students, and I'm pretty confident that I know all 300 names." Mullinix says there's always something going on at the school, from annual gatherings like the back-to-school cookout to monthly events put on in partnership with nearby churches. Students next head to Stephen Decatur Middle School. Both South Shores Elementary and Stephen Decatur Middle earn a C-minus rating on Niche. Students may then attend Eisenhower High School, which has a specialized agricultural education academy and a C-plus on Niche. Students in the Meridian District attend Meridian Elementary School in Blue Mound, about 14 miles southwest and Meridian Middle School in Macon, just under 9 miles south. Both schools earn a B-minus Niche grade. Meridian Middle shares its building with the B-rated Meridian High School B, which Niche rates the third best public high school in Macon County.Driving north on South Franklin
Devonshire residents are very car-dependent due to the neighborhood's distance from the city center. The closest bus stop is under half a mile from the area, but most people drive. South Franklin Street Road, which connects to a bridge that passes over Lake Decatur, is the primary north-south road leading back toward the city. Another option is South Business Route 51, which is about 1 mile to the west. Via either avenue, commuters can be downtown within 4 miles or roughly 10 minutes. For flights out of town, locals travel 7 miles to the Decatur Airport.Retail right before the bridge
A small neighborhood over 3 miles from the city center, Devonshire sits at the end of a long stretch of purely residential areas. While most shopping and dining options are located across Lake Decatur, there are some spots a bit closer to home. "Before you cross the bridge, there are plenty of places to eat and shop at," says Samantha Karch, South Decatur local and secretary to South Shore Elementary's principal. "There's a shopping center right before that has fast food drive-throughs, a Circle K and a Kroger. Plus, The Wharf is one of our favorites." The Wharf is locally known for its casual fare served in a relaxed, nautically themed interior and patio. Three miles east, Karch says Friendly Bar & Grill and The Crowbar are two other neighborhood favorites. Friendly Bar & Grill is the spot for a morning meal or a beer after work, while The Crowbar stays packed most nights with live music lovers hungry for barbeque.
