In the southwest of Decatur lies Enterprise, a small community of neighbors enjoying quiet living near the city. Homes sit farther apart than in other suburban neighborhoods, but neighbors stay close. "On the street I sold on, everyone was so well connected and really looked out for each other," says Charles Durst, a Realtor with Brinkoetter Realtors who has sold homes in the area. "There was this wonderful family who knew that their elderly neighbor didn't have relatives living nearby, so they helped her out in any way they could until she moved to assisted living. Very loving people out there." When residents want to connect with more than just their community, they have a direct route to the rest of the city. Lined with businesses, Illinois State Route 48 leads to retail centers, other major roads and Downtown Decatur.

Infrequent listings in a hot housing market
Along Enterprise's tranquil streets are ranch-style and split-level homes, as well as Colonial-inspired two-story homes. Properties sit on spacious lots, meaning sprawling front and back yards large enough for a garden, playset or shed. Durst says once buyers move into the neighborhood, they're likely to stay a while, creating a network of established neighbors and well-maintained homes. He also says that when houses do go on the market, they aren't up for long. "For the house I sold to my buyer, we had 20 showings in less than 2 days, and we had 6 offers." He also says that if buyers snag an investment property up for sale, they make significant returns by flipping to sell again or rent. Home prices typically range between $100,000 and $150,000, with the upper limit settling around $170,000. However, fixer-upper properties sell in the $50,000 to $95,000 range.

Cross-country skiing at Rock Springs
There are many green spaces within 2 miles of Enterprise. Weekend soccer leagues meet at Borg Warner Field, while Rotary Park is the spot for baseball and softball tournaments. Golf enthusiasts have their pick between the public Red Tail Run Golf Course and the member-only South Side Country Club. For a deeper connection with nature, Durst says that the multifaceted Rock Springs Conservation Area is right around the corner. "Rock Springs has bike trails, a conservation area and a river where you can learn to kayak. In the winter, they offer cross-country skiing and in summer, they host old-fashioned baseball games." Anglers cast lines on the park's five ponds or the Sangamon River. Throughout the year, visitors learn about Illinois' history and natural beauty through guided nature tours or various Macon County Conservation District educational programs. For those who prefer indoor recreation, a few options are closer to home. One mile north on Illinois State Route 105, residents work up a sweat at Decatur Athletic Club, ML Crossfit and RedZone Fitness.

Secluded but not cut off
The neighborhood sits roughly 3 miles from Downtown Decatur, and residents rely mainly on cars to get around. The distance and car dependency can make the area feel far removed from the city, but Durst says, "Part of why people like it out here is because it is more secluded." The feeling of seclusion does not mean that locals are cut off from city life. Drivers usually get downtown in under 10 minutes via the neighborhood's main roads, Illinois State Routes 48 and 105. The neighborhood is also under 3 miles from Highway 51 and Highway 36, which both converge with Interstate 72. To catch a flight, the Decatur Airport is 7 miles east.

Neighbors gather at The Crowbar to grab a drink after work, sing karaoke, listen to local bands and watch annual events, like the Miller Lite Open. Friendly Bar & Grill is an equally popular joint around the corner, offering a similar atmosphere and laidback American fare. Up the road, locals grab discount goods at Dollar General or stop in for a cold brew and a sweet treat at 121 Coffee Run. Heading roughly 1 mile east along Route 105 leads to Blain's Farm & Fleet, the Decatur Police Department and South Towne Plaza shopping center, which has a Kroger, Walgreens and multiple chain restaurants.
