Fans Field
Suburban Neighborhood in Decatur, Illinois
Macon County 62521, 62526
Low prices for both investment and move-in-ready homes
Residential streets make up the center of the community. Although homes can feel densely packed along roads, mature shade trees and the occasional open lot between properties help to create space and privacy. Bungalows and Craftsman-style homes with wide porches and thick columns are most common throughout the neighborhood. Many homes are from the 1920s and 1950s, and prices range between $30,000 and $70,000 depending on condition. However, some move-in ready homes are equal in price to investment properties. Driveways sit beside homes, but some people still park on the street.Baseball season at Fans Field and Hess Park
The neighborhood's primary park shares its name. Fans Field offers a public baseball diamond, ample parking for game days, a small playground and a basketball court. Outside the neighborhood, Grant Park offers similar amenities, and Torrence Park features a community garden. Residents also have access to Hess Park, a nearly 24-acre park and home to the Redbird Rookies, a children's baseball league. The park also hosts several community events, like National Night Out, a block party promoting strong police-community partnerships.Career-focused programming at Decatur high schools
Students are less than 1 mile from Hope Academy, a kindergarten through eighth-grade institution with a C-minus grade on Niche. MacArthur High School and Eisenhower High School are roughly 3 miles away from the community, earning C-plus ratings. Both schools offer several career-focused academies, including a public safety training program. Students are also within 2 miles of two private Catholic schools.Short commutes to employers like Caterpillar
Two large sections of Fans Field hold several industrial businesses, manufacturers and suppliers. The community is next to the city's largest warehouse district, where major employers like Caterpillar, Primient and Mueller Water Products Foundry are located. Residents in those careers enjoy shorter commutes and closer employment opportunities.Driving to Lake Decatur via North 22nd Street
While sidewalks make the neighborhood somewhat walkable, most residents travel by car or bus, even if their commute is short. Bus stops are along most streets, and main roads include East Garfield Avenue and North Jasper Street. However, North 22nd Street, also known as State Route 121, is the community's primary thoroughfare. "Twenty-second is my favorite way to get from the north side all the way down to Lake Decatur and other cities, like Mount Zion," Durst says. "This is a super convenient area to live in if you're trying to get around quickly." Yet, higher traffic flow and nearby train lines mean more noise in the neighborhood. The closest hospital is Decatur Memorial Hospital, 2 miles away, and the Decatur Airport is less than 6 miles away.Retail options, supportive organizations and houses of worship
Despite all the industry in and around the neighborhood, retail and restaurant options are limited. Nearby organizations like Northeast Community Fund and Empowerment Opportunity Center help provide necessary resources to residents. The only sit-down restaurant nearby is Debbie's Diner. Customers settle into this old-fashioned mom and pop eatery for a cup of coffee and a made-to-order omelet. Inside Hickory Street Mini Mart, people can grab snacks and a pizza to go. Shopping centers with grocery stores like Kroger and ALDI are about 2 miles away. Downtown is also 2 miles away in the opposite direction, offering several locally owned restaurants, bars and boutique shops. It's also where several city events take place, like summertime concerts in Central Park. Although the neighborhood is small, it has seven Christian houses of worship in and around its borders. One institution, Central Illinois Christians in Mission, serves the community by delivering food, donating household items and completing large-scale projects for families and organizations in need.City grant targets crime
Fans Field's overall CAP Index crime score is 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. Some categories of violent crime score as high as 9 out of 10. In 2023, the City of Decatur Police Department received a grant to increase officer presence in areas with higher violent crime rates.
