Lakeside living along Basin 1
A lakeside lifestyle is just a given at Greenlake, a quiet community on the eastern outskirts of Decatur. Direct access to Basin 1 of Lake Decatur attracts buyers to the area's waterside properties, and inland homes are right by a public access dock while staying below the city's average home price. While locals might feel far from the city center, amenities like schools, retail hubs and an airport are all within 5 miles. The neighborhood also has access to two distinct avenues that connect locals to Downtown Decatur and beyond.

Public dock available at Sportsmans Park
Greenlake is right along Basin 1 of Lake Decatur, offering ample access to the water and eye-catching views. "People love to walk along the lake," says Colleen Brinkoetter, a Realtor at Brinkoetter Realtors who's sold all over the city. "They'll walk around to Lost Bridge Road and all the way up to Highway 36. My kids' cross-country team used to run that track all the time." A walk around the lake can be up to 5 miles long before hitting the highway. Many homes along the shore have personal boat launches, and Sportsmans Park features a public boat launch for all others. Jet skis and boats cruise the waters year-round, even when the water gets mossy in the heat of summer, especially when it hasn't rained in a while. Licensed anglers with a Salmon Stamp can also use the dock to fish for rainbow trout during open season. Sportsmans Park also houses the Schaub Floral Display Center, which attracts bees and butterflies with its fragrant flowers. Ivy Hill Park on the opposite end of the neighborhood is another popular spot to enjoy the water but from the comfort of wooden benches and gingham-printed picnic blankets.

Shopping for tackle and feeling snackish
The closest retail corridor to Greenlake is 2 miles northeast along Illinois State Route 121. The area features a Walmart Supercenter, Kroger and Aldi. Brittany Lamb, who lives near Greenlake and works as a Realtor at Brinkoetter Realtors, says these are the shopping facilities residents head to first. Between the stores are also chain restaurants and an AMC Classic movie theater. Closer to the neighborhood, about 1-1/2 miles away but still along 121, is Kenney's Ace Hardware and Fisherman's Quarters, a marine supply store for residents who enjoy boating and fishing. Shoppers feeling snackish can pop in next door to Big Hungry's Daylight Donuts. Lamb also says that people don't mind driving a bit farther away for what they need. "There are a lot of different pockets nearby for shopping and dining," she says. "Mount Zion has some nice locally owned restaurants, and it's maybe a 10-minute drive maximum. Our downtown is also known for its restaurants and boutique shops." Mount Zion is about 4 miles south, although its closest restaurants are under 3 miles away. Downtown Decatur is 4-1/2 miles northwest.

Running through the bottom of Greenlake is East Lost Bridge Road, which connects to a bridge 2 miles away crossing over Lake Decatur. Utilizing the bridge connects residents to Downtown Decatur in roughly 5 miles. Illinois State Route 121 is also under 2 miles away to the east, leading drivers toward Highway 36 and the Decatur Airport in the north or Mount Zion in the south. Public transportation is minimal because the neighborhood is far from the city center.

Ranch and bi-level-style homes dominate the landscape, although some Cape Cods and a tiny community of condos are also tucked in. Most homes range between $120,000 and $190,000, but homes with more square footage or lot acreage, especially along the lake, can range between $250,000 and $300,000. Locals keep their lawns neatly cut, with minimal shrubs and shade trees. Certain streets are lined with narrow sidewalks, but most roads are traveled solely by car.
