Holiday Hills has homes close to shopping, dining and parks

Holiday Hills is a mostly residential area on the north side of Decatur, Illinois. This area has many mid-20th-century homes and larger lots than in many parts of the city. The community is near a few parks, big box stores and chain and local restaurants serving diverse cuisines. “It’s a neighborhood where neighbors care about neighbors,” says Randy Grigg, a Realtor with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Service First. “It’s readily accessible to everything — transportation, shopping and entertainment. And it’s not far from Lake Decatur, where there’s a whole other venue of entertainment."

Holiday Hills area offers homes with extra room

Homes here are located along many straight, narrow streets without sidewalks. “The lots are also big. Some of them are half an acre, while many lot sizes in the city are a quarter of an acre or less,” says Tasha Cohen, a Realtor with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Service First. Some homes here have septic systems, which Grigg and Cohen say lead to cost savings. Ranch-style homes are common, but there are also some Colonial Revivals, Craftsman bungalows and gablefront houses. Homes here sell from about $70,000 to $170,000. Renters make up about a quarter of the community.

Outdoor amenities include playgrounds, walking trails and soccer fields

East Mound Park has a playground, narrow walking trails and ample open space with several soccer goals where tournaments are held. Spring Creek also winds through the woods in the middle of the park. The Midstate Soccer Complex, which neighbors East Mound Park, provides more fields for youth and adult soccer programs. Cresthaven Park, located west of Holiday Hills, has another playground, a sand volleyball court and access to the Stevens Creek Bike Trail. “Decatur has many parks, so every area is going to have two or three parks available,” Grigg says.

Students may start at Parsons Elementary and finish at MacArthur High

Parsons Elementary School serves the neighborhood and gets a C from Niche. Stephen Decatur Middle School and MacArthur High School also serve the neighborhood. Both schools receive a C-plus. The high school’s athletic successes include the boy's basketball team winning the Decatur Turkey Tournament in 2022 and reaching the contest’s semi-finals in 2024.

Downtown events include the Decatur Craft Beer Festival

The neighborhood is 4 miles north of downtown Decatur, a destination for several annual events. Festivities include May’s Decatur Craft Beer Festival. Attendees may sample drinks made by brewers from across Central Illinois. The event also offers live music, food trucks and art.

The Holiday Hills area offers several transportation options

The Decatur Public Transit System has several bus stops in the area. Water Street turns into Main Street and goes to downtown Decatur. The neighborhood is close to Interstate 72, which goes to regional neighbors like Springfield and the Champaign-Urbana area. The neighborhood is less than 10 miles north of Decatur Airport, which offers commercial flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Decatur is less than 1 hour from Springfield's Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, with more flight options available. The neighborhood is 2 miles north of Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Chain stores and restaurants border the community

On the community’s south end, Brettwood Village Shopping Center has chains like Kroger and ALDI. Restaurants include Asia House, a takeout-style spot serving a mix of Chinese and Japanese fare. Garden Family Restaurant serves classic American comfort foods, while Los Goldos Food Truck has street-style tacos and other meals made using family recipes. There are more restaurants and stores north of the community. They include J’s Rolled Ice Cream & Drink and chains like Sam’s Club and Walmart. Cohen says the proximity to shopping and dining is a plus. “For example, for people like my mom, who doesn’t like to drive at night or doesn’t like to drive at all, being close to shopping is a big benefit,” Cohen says.
