Northland Heights
Mid-century homes at below average prices
Beyond a busy retail zone to the north, the area is entirely residential, with winding streets passing mid-century houses and quarter-acre lawns. Most homes were built in the 1950s, but a burst of construction in the 1990s brought newer dwellings to the neighborhood’s southern reaches. Home prices start in the mid-$50,000s and peak in the low $200,000s for ranch-style homes built mainly during the 1950s. Smaller, National-style homes run somewhere between the low and high $100,000s. With an average home value of just over $100,000, prices in Northland Heights tend to fall far below state and local real estate averages. “We’re getting a lot of people moving here looking for a bargain when it comes to housing,” says city council member Patrick McDaniel. “And believe me: we’ve got ‘em.”Dual-enrollment at MacArthur High School
Students can begin their education at the James Parson School before heading to Decatur Middle School, both of which have a C-minus on Niche. From there, they can attend MacArthur High School, which has a C and offers a dual-enrollment program, often leading to students finishing high school with an Associate’s Degree. For those interested in private education, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School offers small class sizes and an active role in organizing community charity events.Popular shopping franchises
Near the neighborhood’s northern border, a major shopping area bustles with activity from its familiar retail stores and franchise eateries. Target, Ashley Homegoods and more are represented, with Starbucks and Olive Garden right around the corner. Bigger shopping trips start at the Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth, just 2 miles north. La Gondola Spaghetti House has offered Italian favorites and sandwiches on homemade bread since 1982. When locals would rather eat at home with their families, carryout options include spaghetti, ravioli and tortellini by the gallon.Over 400 animals at the Scovill Zoo
At over 80 acres wide, Cresthaven Park offers a wide variety of outdoor activities for adults and kids alike, with playground equipment, pickleball courts and trails that cut through woodlands filled with local flora and fauna. Residents head to the Scovill Zoo for an experience with animals not often seen in Illinois. Located just 7 miles southeast in the Scovill Gardens area, this beloved zoo is home to more than 400 animals from various parts of the globe.Fresh produce at Richland Farmers Market
Each Monday afternoon from July until the end of August, Richland Community College and its Student Farms host a Farmer’s Market. This indoor event showcases a wide range of seasonal fruits and vegetables from locally-run farms and distinctive handmade crafts created by local artisans.Citywide bus transit
There are few sidewalks in the area, so those without cars use the Decatur Public Transit System. This citywide bus system has several stops along West Mound Road and North Water Street.
