A secluded community in Southwestern Decatur
Tucked into the woodlands of Decatur’s southwestern corner, the community of Rock Springs consists of two small residential zones containing just over 100 houses. Quiet and secluded, the neighborhood is among the last regions of suburbia before the landscape is overwhelmed by farmlands to the south and the Sangamon River Wetlands to the west. “That’s where things start to get rustic and more outdoorsy,” says David Horn, city councilman for Decatur. “It’s popular with our more active residents: there are lots of bike trails and amenities like that.” With real estate prices that fall below the state average, Rock Springs is a popular choice for people who prefer living off the beaten path without being too far from the city.

Mid-century homes off Rock Springs Road
Verdant foliage adds to the secluded, quiet atmosphere of the area. Quarter-acre lawns are dotted with mature oaks and maples, while single-car driveways keep the streets free of most parking. Backyards are consistently filled with dense woodlands or sprawling farmlands. Most homes were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, with mid-century ranch and split-level styles to match the era. Prices start in the low-$100,000s for older, smaller models and reach the mid-$200,000s as construction gets newer and has more square footage.
