Wildwood keeps its streets quiet and homes tidy
In the Wildwood subdivision, the community’s lifestyle is one that prioritizes tranquility and commitment. The area attracts those looking for a quiet nook away from downtown where cars rarely pass by and kids can play outside without worry. Neighbors take pride in maintaining their homes, keeping the neighborhood's visual landscape sharp yet inviting. While Wildwood may not have restaurants and shops within walking distance, its main thoroughfares ensure that locals can find what they need in under 4 miles, including passage over Lake Decatur into the city center. Green spaces surround homes, offering residents sports leagues to join and parks to play in.

Playing basketball in front of homes
Apart from festive seasonal decorations, Wildwood residents like to keep their homes' exteriors minimally decorated. However, architectural styles are diverse from home to home. Ranch-style properties sit next to condominiums, bi-level homes, Colonial-inspired two-stories and split-level houses. Spacious lots sit along cul-de-sac streets, meaning cars rarely pass by while locals walk pets through the neighborhood and kids play pickup basketball near the road. "You don't feel like you're in Decatur on this side of town," says Samantha Karch, a south Decatur local. She says the neighborhoods of south Decatur champion living at a slower pace—a clear opposite to the beating energy of downtown Decatur. Home prices primarily hover in the $130,000 to $170,000 range, but houses approaching 2,000 square feet typically sell between $180,000 and $220,000.
Large homes on corner lots are available in Wildwood.

Taking the bridge over Lake Decatur
Wildwood is at the very south of Decatur, so people's fastest route to downtown is crossing a bridge over Lake Decatur. "We're really lucky we get to cross the lake all the time," says Kristi Mullinix, south Decatur resident and principal at South Shores Elementary School. "The view from the bridge is beautiful early in the morning and late at night—any time of day, really. I get to look over and see people fishing and water skiing, and it just makes me feel grateful to live here." Most people take South Franklin Street Road, the area's main north-south road, to get to the bridge, but Business Route 51 is also an option. Bus stops heading into the city are also along South Franklin. To take to the skies, the Decatur Airport sits under 8 miles northeast.

Shopping South Towne Plaza
The neighborhood is strictly residential, meaning no stores or restaurants are immediately accessible. However, residents are just 2 miles from South Towne Plaza. Groceries and everyday essentials are found at Kroger, Circle K and Walgreens. The center also has a few local eateries, like Guadalajara and The Wharf, which Karch says is her family's favorite. Before setting sights downtown, people can also head 3 miles northwest to Illinois State Route 48, lined with small businesses. Friendly Bar & Grill and The Crowbar are popular for drinks and casual bites on the patio, while 121 Coffee Run is known for its signature cold brews.
The South Towne Plaza provides Wildwood residents with most of their shopping needs.

Teeing up at Red Tail Run Golf Course
Wildwood sits parallel to multiple green spaces offering diverse outdoor recreation. Just west, Rotary Park hosts weekend baseball, softball and volleyball tournaments all summer. Spectators can grab snacks at the concessions stand before watching leagues go head-to-head. Directly below the park is Red Tail Run Golf Course, a public green offering five tee locations suited for all skill levels. One mile northwest, Borg-Warner Field is the spot for youth soccer. For fun on the playground, South Shores Park sits 1 mile east next to South Shores Elementary School. Karch says her kids always walk over there since they live nearby and attend the school, but neighborhood children not zoned for South Shores Elementary are just as welcomed.

Students zoned for Meridian school district
Although Wildwood is within Decatur city limits, its school zoning falls within Meridian Community Unit School District 15, not Decatur Public Schools. This means elementary students are being bussed roughly 14 miles south of the city, and middle and high school students are bussed around 9 miles south. Students attend Meridian Elementary School in Blue Mound, which has a B-minus Niche score. Students then move to Meridian Middle School and Meridian High School in Macon. The schools share a building, although the middle school receives a B-minus score while the high school earns a B. Meridian High is also considered by Niche the third-best public high school in Macon County.
Educational opportunities abound at Meridian Elementary School.
Meridian Middle School offers plenty of fun after school activities.
