While still staying true to its proud Western heritage, which can be seen in restored facades along the city square, Decatur is a small city located about 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth. The county seat of Wise County has a little under 7,000 people but has grown steadily in population since 1990. Home to the Wise County Courthouse, a pink granite structure built in 1896, Decatur Square has become the epicenter of the community. Featuring multiple restaurants and shops housed in historical buildings with restored facades, the square makes it feel like locals are walking through a Western movie. The city runs a highly-rated school district and six public parks. “I would say the city's people make it special,” says Heath Taylor, who was born and raised in Decatur and now works as the city’s Parks Superintendent. “The city is definitely growing, but you still have that small-town community feel. You can raise your family out of the craziness and busyness of the Dallas-Fort Worth area but still get there quickly.”
