Proud western city northwest of Fort Worth
While still staying true to its proud Western heritage, which can be seen in restored facades along the city square, Decatur is a small city located about 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth. The county seat of Wise County has a little under 7,000 people but has grown steadily in population since 1990. Home to the Wise County Courthouse, a pink granite structure built in 1896, Decatur Square has become the epicenter of the community. Featuring multiple restaurants and shops housed in historical buildings with restored facades, the square makes it feel like locals are walking through a Western movie. The city runs a highly-rated school district and six public parks. “I would say the city's people make it special,” says Heath Taylor, who was born and raised in Decatur and now works as the city’s Parks Superintendent. “The city is definitely growing, but you still have that small-town community feel. You can raise your family out of the craziness and busyness of the Dallas-Fort Worth area but still get there quickly.”

Architectural styles ranging from multiple time periods in Decatur
A unique thing about the Decatur housing market is that architectural styles range across time frames from the city's inception in the 1850s. Most of the original home inventory is spread throughout the city, giving residents spacious yards. It features Victorian homes with colorful shingles, ranch homes and Craftsman homes that offer wide front porches. Newer home developments put homes closer together but feature more traditional brick houses or farmhouse-style properties. Prices range from $210,000 to $2 million, but the median home value is around $340,000.

The Decatur Square
Constructed in 1896 and made of pink granite, the Wise County Courthouse is at the center of Decatur Square. Surrounding the courthouse is a collection of boutique stores and restaurants housed in restored facades of historic buildings. Locals can walk from stores like Cowgirl Crap Boutique and Nooks ‘N Crannies or take the kids to the Hey Sugar Candy Shop. The area is also filled with local restaurants and watering holes. Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes is a southwest-themed restaurant featuring stucco walls, wooden beams and leather chairs. Newcomers to the square, Trinity Street Coffee Bar, which brews its coffee but also has a vast whiskey selection, or The County Seat, a speakeasy-themed bar, have added a bit of nightlife to the square. “With some of the new restaurants and bars opening up on the square, the area has become a place to go for nightlife,” Taylor says. While the square has locally owned shops along U.S. Highway 287, residents can find national chains such as Walmart, Tractor Supply, and Lowes, which are surrounded by fast food chains like Whataburger.

Another popular event is the Chisolm Trail Days, which celebrates Decatur’s western heritage with an annual rodeo.
