Long-term neighborhood with heart

The people of Deer Park are devoted to their community. “A lot of folks that have left Deer Park come back, or people have lived there their entire lives,” says Realtor and Cincinnati native Steve Elbert, who has sold homes for over forty years. “People love this place, and there are a lot of long-term residents because of that.” This love is partially due to Deer Park’s ability to accommodate most needs — near Kenwood Mall for shopping, close to Jewish and TriHealth hospitals for health care, and within the Deer Park Community School District for schooling. It’s common to see community members on front porches, greeting the mailperson they’ve known for decades. Or people walking along narrow sidewalks, taking in the seasonal cold or humid air. Whatever they do, they’ll probably stick around for a while.

Brick ranch-styles and siding-lined Cape Cods

Postwar ranch-styles and Cape Cods remain a testament to the neighborhood’s beginnings in the 1940s, with bay windows and low-pitched roofs that remind the viewer of time past. Buyers might still find antique hardwood floors and wallpapered kitchens, but most Deer Park homes have brand-new interiors and kitchen appliances. While market opportunities are rare, two-bedrooms will go between $200,000 and $250,000, while three-bedrooms are more around $280,000. “It’s a very affordable area,” says Realtor Steve Elbert. “Deer Park isn’t as pricey as nearby Montgomery or Hyde Park, and you get a lot of value for your money.” Small lots are the main reason for this affordability, meaning less lawn upkeep for starters or retirees.

Chamberlin and Bechtold Parks

The symbolic and literal center of the neighborhood, Chamberlin Park holds year-round events in its 13-acre green space, including a summer concert series and frequent yoga sessions. There, locals might have a private event at Francis R. Healy Community Center, host of America’s first commercial haunted house. Nearby Bechtold Park is Sycamore Township’s most popular park, and residents can play in its two sand volleyball courts or have a meal in its 90-person picnic shelters.

Chicken on the Run, Kenwood Mall

After a workout at Chamberlin Park, locals can fuel up at Chicken on the Run, where they can munch on Midwestern sloppy joes and catch the game. Arrechissimo Restaurant has Venezuelan arepas and empanadas, and nearby El Jinete serves up Mexican tacos and fajitas. Dillonvale IGA is the closest option for grocery runs, but residents will drive two miles to the Kenwood Towne Centre for shopping sprees. This million-square-foot facility houses brands like Macy’s, Dillard’s and Nordstrom. For access to health care, Mercy Health’s Jewish Hospital and TriHealth are also in this area.
