Cylon is a quiet community in the farms and forests of St. Croix County

Deep in the western Wisconsin farmlands, Cylon is a rural community in St. Croix County. Sparsely populated, the township offers the privacy and low crime rates often associated with small-town living. Cylon’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. However, proximity to larger areas like New Richmond and Minneapolis ensures that locals can access more than just farms and trees. “It has a lot of rural character, but it’s close to enrichment,” says Jason Kjeseth, director of community development for St. Croix County. “So, you’re not far from lots of shopping and entertainment.” Lower-than-average real estate prices and opportunities for acreage also attract homebuyers looking for a piece of the country.

Ranch-style homes often have multiple acres

With a median lot size of over two acres, homes have a higher level of privacy than those in suburban communities. Houses are typically surrounded by trees and have outdoor-focused amenities like decks and firepits. Ranch-style homes are the most common, priced between the high $100,000s and the high $300,000s, depending on size, condition and acreage.

Cylon Wildlife Area is the largest protected park in St. Croix County

With over 2,600 acres of protected forests, grasslands and meadows, the Cylon Wildlife Area is the largest stretch of wilderness in St. Croix County. Nature lovers can hike, canoe or birdwatch, while hunters can take advantage of the variety of game available. Known for its dam on the Apple River, Black Brook Park has a playground, picnic area and boat landing.

New Richmond High has 2025's Wisconsin Teacher of the Year

Students begin their education at Lien Elementary School, which has a B grade from Niche, before heading to Amery Middle School, which has an A-minus. Finally, they’ll enroll at New Richmond High School, which has a B-plus. The high school was recently honored — one of its teachers was named the 2025 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year by the Department of Public Instruction.

Family friendly events in New Richmond every year

New Richmond celebrates Fun Fest every summer with a long weekend of live entertainment, food and carnival rides, culminating in a parade. Heritage Days invites visitors to learn more about the area’s history and culture with pioneer demonstrations, exhibitions and music.

An hour from the Twin Cities

U.S. Route 63 and State Highway 64 are the two main thoroughfares in the area. Minneapolis and St. Paul are about an hour’s drive. Public transit isn’t available, so residents will require a car for most travel.

Casual tavern fare at Shotgun Suzie's and the Highway Hideout

In addition to its laid-back menu, Shotgun Suzie’s Saloon hosts regular events like live music and their annual chili cookoff. Drink specials flow at night, but the daytime atmosphere is family friendly, whatever the name suggests. Established in 2024, The Highway Hideout features an upscale tavern atmosphere with specialty cocktails and quality cuts of steak. New Richmond is 13 miles away, and has an Aldi, Dick’s Fresh Market and several retail and service options.
