Rural Carroll County town with a neighborly attitude
Rockfield sprang up along with other Carroll County, Indiana communities when railroads and substantial roads came through. Today, Norfolk Southern Railway freight trains rattle along the tracks that cut through the town's center; but most of the time, peace and quiet define this rural, residential enclave. It contains a small number of homes surrounded by cornfields, which are mostly owned by corporate entities or multi-generational farms. In the 20th century, the Carroll County population shifted away from rural townships like Rockfield. Though their numbers are few, many Rockfield residents are willing to lend a hand to their fellow neighbors and to the volunteer fire department. "When my neighbors are out in their yard, we talk for a little bit — if I need help, they'll help me, and if they need help, I help them," says Michael Koebler, co-owner of R-B Enterprise, a used car dealer in town.
