There’s always something happening in the village
For many, life in the Villages of Oriole is like a permanent summer camp. Comprising eight separate 55-plus developments, this community has become one of the most active — and coveted — age-restricted areas in Delray Beach. It is a hive of energy that keeps neighbors engaged with clubs, sports, newsletters and events, such as annual St. Patrick’s Day parties or book clubs that meet at the local Hagen Ranch Road Library. “My wife has a full schedule every day of activities, whether it’s water aerobics, dance or this or that,” says Doug Brantz, a Realtor with Keller Williams Boca Raton and resident of the Huntington Lakes village. “You’re not just buying a place to live, you’re buying a way of life,” Brantz says. Across the street, grocery stores and restaurants border the Delray Orthodox Synagogue and Temple Anshei Shalom. Villages of Oriole is a convenient choice for social seniors just 7 miles from the sandy shores of Delray Beach.
Many subdivisions in Villages of Oriole offer their residents community pool and a clubhouse.

Condos come in all shapes and sizes
The community’s eight villages each offer slightly different accommodations, giving homebuyers their pick of condos, duplexes and detached homes with gated entry. Huntington Lakes’ two-bedroom condos sit in spacious midrise buildings surrounded by tropical foliage. Aptly named Huntington Towers stands a bit taller, offering three-bedroom units overlooking the community’s reservoirs. Detached single-family homes are only available in the Avalon Trails development, which is at the heart of the community on the grounds of the former Marina Lakes Golf Course. Single-story condos make up most of the Deauville, Abbey and Bonaire villages. Camelot Village takes on a traditional look with detached duplexes clad in rich terra cotta siding. International Club offers the greatest convenience, with gated sidewalks leading straight to the neighboring shopping center.
Detached homes in Avalon Trails command the highest prices, typically selling for between $500,000 and $700,000. Condo prices are fairly consistent from village to village, with most two- and three-bedroom units ranging from about $200,000 to just under $400,000. Association fees, however, are set independently by each village and can vary greatly.
Larger condos can be found in the Huntington Park subdivision of Villages of Oriole.

Clubhouse pools and lakeside trails
When it comes to recreation, Villages of Oriole doesn’t hold back. Each development features its own clubhouse, pools, fitness center, game room and 600-seat theater. Some villages have a dedicated event coordinator responsible for organizing everything from dinner parties to yoga classes, and each offers clubs that bring book lovers, crafters, pickleball fans or gardeners together. There’s also a paved trail circling the community’s central lakes, and although residents are unlikely to see a gator here, Brantz says there are plenty of iguanas to spot.
For longer walks and even more wildlife, Brantz recommends exploring the Green Cay Nature Center & Wetlands, a hundred-acre expanse about 3 miles away with a classic wooden boardwalk and plenty of room for birdwatching. West Delray Regional Park attracts adventurers to the edge of the Everglades with its 3-D Archery Club, disc golf course and mountain bike trail. Golfers have a handful of clubs and courses to choose from, including Gleneagles Country Club and Delray Beach Golf Club.
Many subdivisions in Villages of Oriole offer amenities such as pools and shuffle board.

Family-owned Penelope’s Diner is a local staple
Villages of Oriole Plaza is home to both Publix and Glicks Kosher Market. Four Brothers Italian is a popular stop for pizza, while Shanghai serves traditional Chinese fare. But it’s the family-owned Penelope’s Diner that draws the biggest crowd for breakfast and lunch, with some locals making a daily stop to dine on specialty crepes. Behind the Dollar Tree and Pet Supermarket, Movies of Delray invites viewers to enjoy both blockbuster and indie films as well as special events such as a live shadow cast showing of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Movie buffs will find even more showtimes about 2 miles down the road at Paragon Theaters, an anchor of the walkable outdoor Delray Marketplace. International restaurants and casual boutiques line the columned promenade, and there’s plenty of sidewalk seating within earshot of the marketplace amphitheater.
