Lively urban neighborhood home to the Colorado State Capitol
Art, culture and Colorado history collide in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood at the heart of Denver. “People who move to this neighborhood want to experience the energy of the city,” says Roberta Walker, a Denver local and Realtor with Keller Williams. “The draw for buyers is that they are usually able to find something to fit their price point and enjoy the urban setting and eclectic vibe.” Named after the Colorado State Capitol residing in its boundaries, this neighborhood is home to several political establishments and history museums that draw people from all over. Although mostly residential, Capitol Hill is still home to a diverse shopping and dining scene, particularly along Colfax Avenue: “Colfax is one of those iconic streets with lots of character. It’s kind of like “the hub” of this area,” Walker says. With multiple neighborhood parks, the state capitol lawn and proximity to the sprawling Cheesman Park, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation and greenery for residents to enjoy here. People visiting the city for the first time should prepare to adjust to Denver’s high-altitude environment, especially if they plan on skiing or hiking.

Historic landmarks and modern celebrations collide
There are a number of iconic landmarks in this neighborhood, including the golden-domed Colorado State Capitol building, which first opened in 1894 and displays intricate neoclassical architecture. Another well-known landmark is the Colorado Governor’s Residence, also known as “Colorado’s Home.” The home of Margaret “Molly” Brown, a famous Titanic survivor, is also located in this neighborhood and operates as a museum and architectural symbol. During June, PrideFest parades and celebrations march through Capitol Hill and draw thousands of festivalgoers. And every spring since 2006, the city has hosted the Colfax Marathon: “The marathon starts at Colfax Park, and it’s one of the fastest growing events in the country. It's really fun, and it brings together the community,” Walker says. Residents can buy tickets to their favorite music artists shows at several concert venues, including the Filmore Auditorium and Ogden Theatre.

Vibrant nightlife scene and plant-based restaurants
“People here love the easy access to all kinds of restaurants, boutiques and the unique charm of Colfax Avenue,” Walker says. “It’s a source of never-ending entertainment, whether it be food, shopping or people watching – Colfax has a great energy.” In addition to the commercial area along Colfax, several local dining spots are scattered throughout Capitol Hill – one such place is the popular City O’ City, a vegetarian restaurant that offers a wide selection of plant-based menu items. For brunch, residents can grab a table at Jelly, a cafe with scratch-made breakfast and lunch favorites. The nightlife scene comes alive in Capitol Hill, and locals head to venues such as Bar Nun Denver and The Black Box, a dance club open on the weekends. Basic groceries and household items can be found at smaller neighborhood stores, such as Capitol Market, and residents can do their weekly grocery shopping at Natural Grocers and Trader Joe’s.

Spend a summer day at Civic Center Park
Situated on the sprawling lawn at the base of the Colorado State Capitol is Civic Center Park, a meticulously landscaped green space full of paved walking paths, sculptures and a Greek amphitheater; Civic Center Park is also known for its frequent events. “Food trucks come to the park in the spring and summer, and there’s always political events happening there,” Walker says. She adds that small city parks can also be found throughout the area: “Denver really had the foresight to aside space for parks as the city grew.” These smaller parks include Governors Park, which features a playground and paved pedestrian paths, and Quality Hill Park.

Popular “Denver Square” home style seen throughout the neighborhood
“There are many multifamily properties in this area – incredibly charming condos from the early 1900s and many built in the latter half of the 20th century,” Walker says. “There are also many single-family homes, including the traditional “Denver Square” style and gorgeous Victorian mansions.” In Denver, American Foursquares are referred to as “Denver Squares” because it is believed that the home style originated here. Traditional-style homes with front-facing gables and asymmetrical compositions are also commonly seen in this neighborhood. Townhouses and condo buildings sometimes feature flourishes of neoclassical architecture and tend to range in price between about $250,000 and $600,000. Prices for single-family homes typically range higher, with properties starting around $800,000 and climbing up to nearly $2 million.

Light rail line directly to Denver International Airport
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) operates bus routes and light rail lines throughout the city. The Route 6 and Route 12 bus lines run through Capitol Hill, and nearby light rail stops include the 10th/Osage station and the 16th St/California station. Commuters are only a mile-long drive away from Denver’s Central Business District; wide sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly city streets mean residents can also get to the business district by walking or riding their bikes. Denver International Airport is an approximately 24-mile drive away, but the light rail’s A Line takes riders directly there from the city center. SkyRide Bus also runs routes to and from the airport and has features to accommodate passenger’s luggage. Both the Denver Health Emergency Room and Intermountain Health’s Saint Joseph Hospital are located approximately a mile away from the neighborhood.
Public transportation makes Capitol Hill fairly easy to get around.

Capitol Hill is perfectly located a quick bike ride away from LoDo, the Central Business District, and South Broadway. Cheesman Park is a great outdoor space in the neighborhood. In the summer, there are always activities at Civic Center Park and a nice Christmas market as well.

I have lived within one block of the Capitol for 6 years. The homeless population is taking over. I do not feel safe at Civic Center park. I will not even walk my dog at Lincoln park because of all the needles. There is great access to the very best of Denver but the homeless population ruins the experience. I plan to move to Washington Park.
