Clayton

Local spots include an urban mixed-use development
An eclectic collection of small businesses and restaurants is scattered throughout Clayton. Rivers and Roads Coffee is a gluten-free café serving breakfast and lunch, while next door, Flux Studio is a ceramic studio and gallery offering pottery classes. For classic Mexican dishes and fresh corn tortillas, head to Lucero’s, a family-owned spot that has called Clayton home since 1962. Locals also gather at the York Street Yards, where historic industrial buildings have been repurposed into a trendy coworking space. Alongside flexible workspaces, the campus includes fitness centers and various amenities. Locals can grab a Czech-style lager at Cohesion Brewing or work from home at Skiptown, an off-leash dog park and bar serving coffee and craft beverages. For groceries, Park Hill Supermarket sells specialty international goods, while Safeway is about 3 miles south.
Festivities at the York Street Yards
With nearly 500,000 square feet of space, York Street Yards hosts a vibrant collection of outdoor and indoor events. Each Wednesday, locals can grab lunch from a rotating cast of local food trucks. In 2023, the campus hosted larger events such as the annual gala for the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and Denver Fashion Week. The eight-day festival highlighted local and national designers with runway shows, workshops and more.Traditional homes with traces of new construction
Established in the late 1800s, Clayton features a wide variety of homes reflecting the area’s development as neighborhoods around Downtown Denver have become more desirable. “The market can move quickly, but it’s still not quite as fast as neighborhoods further south like City Park,” Neumann says. Residential streets are densely populated as striking Queen Anne builds with rounded, turret-like gables cast shadows over smaller bungalows and cottages. Homebuyers can find three-bedroom Queen Anne homes built in the early 1900s starting at around $625,000 or three-bedroom bungalows with shaded front porches ranging from about $530,000 to $760,000. In the northeast corner of the community, new construction brings a touch of modernity to the streets, with two-bedroom units in the Greenway Townhomes community starting at about $640,000.Opportunities for outdoor and indoor recreation
Clayton is known for the City of Nairobi Park, an animal-themed green space named after Denver’s sister city. The park has a ballfield and playground where kids can climb on life-sized animal sculptures. Locals also gather at Schafer Park, which features tennis courts, basketball courts and a playground. From mid-October to late April, Denver residents see an average snowfall of 57 inches and gather at indoor spaces such as Dive Volleyball and Sports Center or Stick and Feather, an indoor golf facility.Traveling to Downtown Denver and beyond
Interstate 70 is 2 miles north of Clayton and connects to the Denver International Airport, which is about 20 miles from residents. Locals are also just 3 miles from Downtown Denver, and several bus stops along Bruce Randolph Avenue provide service to the city center. Other transportation options include the Regional Transportation District’s commuter rail line, with the closest train station less than a mile away at 40th and Colorado.School choice in Denver public schools
Children attend the Denver Public School District and kids in grades K-5 begin their education at the International Academy of Denver at Harrington, which earned a C from Niche. Kids in grades 6-12 are zoned to attend the Bruce Randolph School, which earned a grade of C-minus. The school offers a robust English Acquisition Program for students learning English and boasts a 100% college acceptance rate. Colorado is an open-enrollment state, meaning that students can apply to attend other public schools within or outside of their district.A rich history
The neighborhood is named after George W. Clayton, a prominent philanthropist who left his estate to help found the Clayton College for Boys, which opened its doors in 1911. The brick campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now home to Clayton Early Learning, an innovation hub that works to build equitable communities through educational programs.
