Bloomfield/Allen
Manufactured homes and neighborhoods by the lake
Lake Easter homes may not sit on the lake, but they are within a short distance of Lake Easter's many public playgrounds, trails and beach. New split-level and ranch-style contemporary homes with three or more bedrooms can start at around $230,000 and go for as much as $375,000. Larger family homes with two- to three-car garages and wide windows may be priced from $275,000 to almost $400,000. “The people I know that have purchased in Bloomfield/Allen have been able to find affordable, new-ish homes,” Rohlf says. “A lot of the area was developed in the early 2000s and still has a lot of room for development.” Single-family homes just east of Indianola Avenue built in the early 2000s cost between $250,000 and $350,000. For something a little cozier, manufactured and mobile homes off Bloomfield Road can range from $50,000 to $150,000. Townhouses in neat rows off Indianola Avenue are often priced around $250,000.Powerful programs at Des Moines public schools
Students living north and south of Lake Easter may attend different schools, depending on where they are zoned. Most Bloomfield/Allen students attend Jackson Elementary School, which scores a C on Niche and participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program, meaning that free breakfast and lunch are provided daily for all students. After that, students can head to McCombs Middle School on the southern side of town, which scores a C-minus. Finally, students can attend East High School, 5 miles north of Lake Easter. The school scores a C and offers the Sisters 4 Success and Brother 2 Brother programs, which build the confidence and leadership skills of young men and women of color.Conveniently close to Downtown Des Moines
Downtown Des Moines is a straight shot up Indianola Avenue, about 5 miles away. With only a 15-minute commute during low traffic, those working in the city or looking to spend a night on the town will find easy access to all that downtown has to offer. The Iowa Methodist Medical Center is right downtown for checkups or emergencies. For weekends away, the Des Moines International Airport is 6 miles west down East Army Post Road for weekends away. For those who prefer to take the bus, there are several stops all along Southeast 14th Street, which are serviced by the Dart bus system.Popular chains and a few local bites on SE 14th Street
Though many Bloomfield/Allen residents commute into the city for most of their shopping needs, there are still several grocery stores and fast-food chains on Southeast 14th Street. Founded in 1961, Tasty Tacos serves classic Mexican cuisine and has been family-owned and operated for over fifty years. SudSuckers sports bar is a great spot for listening to live music or playing pool. Nacho Tequilas, established in 2015, specializes in serving innovative Mexican food. For everyday errands, folks can find Walmart and Menards nearby, as well as the Southridge Mall shopping center, which has several clothing stores such as Maurice and Marshalls.Paddle, boat or walk around Lake Easter
Easter Lake Park has almost six miles of winding trails surrounding its calm waters, where many residents have been known to fish and splash. Easter Lake Spine Trail is a popular route around the lake for walks with family, friends or dogs. Walkers can stop at a few of the shelters and pavilions to get some shade or have a picnic. The park also has several playgrounds, as well as new ones being built throughout the property. With an updated beach and boat docks, the Easter Lake Boat Rental offers passenger pontoon boats, motorboats, kayaks and paddle boards for fun on the water. “For a Midwest city, there are many things you can do outdoors in the summertime. The neighborhood is even near the Mark C. Ackelson Bike Trail,” Rohlf says. Ewing Park Dog Park is one of the largest dog parks in Iowa, perfect for running off some energy during the day. Disc golfers enjoy the challenge at Ewing Park’s expansive disc golf course, and walkers can stroll through the lush hills of the Lilac Arboretum during peak bloom season. Ewing Park also features the large Ashely Okland Star Playground, with swings, monkey bars and plenty of ways to play.
