Detroit’s comeback fueled by engaged neighborhoods like Belmont
A city put on the map with its once-booming automotive industry, Detroit has experienced its fair share of hills and valleys in recent years. However, thanks to the engagement efforts of communities like Belmont, the city is on its way to a welcomed resurgence as it pushes forward to the future. “Detroit has been campaigning to repopulate the city to what it once was. We still have very vibrant communities that go above and beyond for the residents, and Belmont is one of them,” says Harrison R. Duke, a local historian and community advocate born and raised in Detroit. “These communities produce newsletters, organize advisory boards, have community-specific security patrols and snow removal services in the winter, and all to improve the quality of life.”
Tudor and Colonial styles mix with smaller bungalows on small lawns
The streets of Belmont are characterized by lush, green lawns with trimmed hedges and shaded sidewalks lined with flourishing trees. Brick single-family homes populate the community, exhibiting a variety of architectural styles. Tudor-influenced homes feature small front stoops and side porches covered with metal awnings. Spacious Colonial Revival homes come with columned entryways and side chimneys. Bungalows introduce a cozier setup for those not looking to keep up too much living space. Detached garages and small lamp posts in the homes’ lawns are standard. Most of these three- and four-bedroom homes are priced under $100,000, although some can reach the $130,000 range.
Tech-forward elementary school and a high school with dual enrollment
As part of the Detroit Public Schools Community School District, students can attend John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy before heading to Renaissance High School. Designated a one-to-one school, John R. King provides each student with their own laptop, and technology is encouraged during the learning process. Recognized as a DPSCSD Premier Examination School, Renaissance is known for its students’ academic achievements and offers dual enrollment, college internships and AP and IB courses. According to Niche, John R. King holds an overall Niche grade of C-minus, while Renaissance has a B.
Athletes and kids exercise at a comprehensive nearby park
The ultimate in outdoor enjoyment, Peterson Playfield has athletes and sports enthusiasts covered when they want to practice and play. From sports courts for basketball and tennis to a baseball field for more than just baseball — the locals like to hold neighborhood kickball games there — there’s always something to do at this all-encompassing play place. Kids can also run around the colorful playground or cool down at the spray ground on hot summer days. Puritan-Coyle Park is smaller, featuring a playground and swing set, but could soon be a part of an upcoming park project. “So many parks have been revamped, and more have upcoming upgrade projects,” says Duke. “There’s an ongoing effort to establish new facilities and cityscapes and to expand the existing ones.”
Grocery stores, pharmacies and Southern restaurants a walk away
Greenfield Market is a local favorite for groceries, fresh produce and everyday essentials. The nearby Meijer also carries groceries and big-box items, including apparel, home goods and electronics. Residents frequent the local Dollar General or CVS for a quick grab-and-go on personal care items or pharmacy services. Southern dishes and hospitality are on the menu at The Southern Smokehouse, offering a menu of smoked meats like ribs, brisket and oxtail paired with classic southern sides. There are also healthier options like turkey wings and chops and baked fish. At the Urban Grill, everything from salads to flatbread pizza to seafood dinners can be enjoyed, as well as some desserts that are a hit with the locals.
A nearby major employer and close access to medical services
One convenient amenity of the area is its proximity to DMC Sinai Grace Hospital. Located just four blocks from the northern edge of Belmont, the hospital provides quality care to its patients with a wide range of services. It hosts in-person and virtual educational luncheon seminars to equip residents with the know-how to take control of their health.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
