Buffalo Charles is named for its location at the intersection of Buffalo and Charles streets in the heart of Northeast Detroit. The cultural enclave of Banglatown sits across Conant, while Jayne-Lasky Park forms the neighborhood's northwest corner. Access to nearby conveniences pair with competitive home prices, plus Hamtramck’s large General Motors plant, which is less than 3 miles away.
Like many Detroit neighborhoods, Buffalo Charles was developed with the primary goal of housing autoworkers. General Motors’ “Factory Zero” plant in Hamtramck is a 10-minute drive south, offering employment opportunities to over 4,500 workers. The nearest hospital, the Highland Park Health Center, is an 8-minute drive down State Route 8.

Deep in the heart of the neighborhood, Charles Deli & Grocery serves as the local corner store, while LeRoy’s Kitchen is a popular catering outlet due to its menu of soul food and seafood. Evening sees Outer Limits Lounge take on a rock-and-roll atmosphere as local bands offer a soundtrack for no-frills, dive bar relaxation.
Jayne-Lasky Park offers plenty of outdoor recreation in the northwest corner of Buffalo Charles. Baseball diamonds, soccer fields, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts fill its 65 acres of green space. The park also includes a small space for canine play, plus Detroit’s only public minigolf course.
Davison Elementary-Middle School, located in neighboring Banglatown, serves grades K-8 and receives a C rating from Niche. C-minus-rated Pershing High School, though struggling with declining enrollment and threatened closure, gives its students chances to shine in engineering and STEM programs.
