A newly defined neighborhood with deep roots in Detroit culture
Buffalo Charles is named for its location at the intersection of Buffalo and Charles streets in the heart of Northeast Detroit. The cultural enclave of Banglatown sits across Conant, while Jayne-Lasky Park forms the neighborhood's northwest corner. Access to nearby conveniences pair with competitive home prices, plus Hamtramck’s large General Motors plant, which is less than 3 miles away.
Easy access to factory jobs and healthcare
Like many Detroit neighborhoods, Buffalo Charles was developed with the primary goal of housing autoworkers. General Motors’ “Factory Zero” plant in Hamtramck is a 10-minute drive south, offering employment opportunities to over 4,500 workers. The nearest hospital, the Highland Park Health Center, is an 8-minute drive down State Route 8.
Vintage homes are being remodeled in Buffalo Charles
Homes in Buffalo Charles speak to the rise of the Motor City’s automaking industry. Most properties were built from the 1900s to the ’50s in conjunction with jobs in the booming industry. In the 1990s, Buffalo Charles fell on hard times because of deindustrialization, but the neighborhood is experiencing new investment as vintage properties are remodeled. Updated properties have sold for $215,000 to $250,000, while older homes can sell for $90,000 to $200,000. The core of the neighborhood consists mostly of apartments, while its outer streets are densely packed with small homes and curbside trees.
Diverse cuisines and shops are around every corner
Due to its location along Conant, Buffalo Charles offers easy access to diverse shopping and dining. Several Bangladeshi businesses line the major thoroughfare, with Aladdin Sweets and Café being among the most established. The restaurant specializes in Bengali entrees like biryani as well as traditional desserts like Makhan malai. Bangladeshi food markets add to Buffalo Charles’ selection of grocery options, which also includes Family Dollar and Dollar General. Deep in the heart of the neighborhood, Charles Deli & Grocery serves as the local corner store, while LeRoy’s Kitchen is a popular catering outlet due to its menu of soul food and seafood. Evening sees Outer Limits Lounge take on a rock-and-roll atmosphere as local bands offer a soundtrack for no-frills, dive bar relaxation.
Jayne-Lasky Park is a go-to for outdoor recreation
Jayne-Lasky Park offers plenty of outdoor recreation in the northwest corner of Buffalo Charles. Baseball diamonds, soccer fields, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts fill its 65 acres of green space. The park also includes a small space for canine play, plus Detroit’s only public minigolf course.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
