The birthplace of John DeLorean
Eight miles north of downtown Detroit, there lies the childhood home of John DeLorean, founder of the automotive company that developed the DMC DeLorean, the car featured in the Back to the Future movies. With smaller homes that sit close to one another on narrow lots, a small collection of local stores and a nearby industrial sector, the neighborhood of Cadillac Heights retains the same blue-collar vibe that defined DeLorean’s childhood and steeped him in automotive culture. When asked about why people live there, Luchy, owner of Koko Rose Studios on Nevada Avenue, credits the community members with making the neighborhood special. “It’s the community and the people,” says Luchy, who has lived in the area for 10 years. “The people keep it together, especially the older people. The older people really take care of their homes and the community.”

Interstate 75 is convenient for drivers but may create some noise
One of the defining features of Cadillac Heights is its western border, marked by Interstate 75. With the highway running just next to the neighborhood, some of its westernmost streets may be subject to traffic noise. The interstate makes downtown Detroit an 8-mile drive south and connects residents to the northern Michigan Mitten. More local thoroughfares in the neighborhood include Nevada Avenue, Dequindre Street and East McNichols Road, all three of which are lined with Detroit Department of Transportation bus stops. Sidewalks also accompany the community’s streets, so residents can access bus stops on foot and forego driving. While the neighborhood’s streets are wide enough for parking, many homes have slim driveways that occasionally reach a small backyard driveway.

Buddy’s Pizza and the beginnings of Detroit-style pizza
“There aren’t a lot of restaurants over here, but most of the places are independent,” Luchy says. “Coney spots like L.A. Coney Island are good, and the soul food spots are the busiest.” In 1946, Buddy’s Pizza was established on Conant and became the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza, eventually earning a featured spot on Food Network’s list of top places to eat. To this day, Buddy’s remains a locally loved destination for pizza and other Italian-inspired fare. Established in 1951, Joe Ann’s BBQ on Jerome Street serves up some of the area’s most beloved barbecue. To pick up fresh fruits and veggies, residents can head north to the intersection of Conant and Seven Mile, where a Royal Fresh Market awaits. Nearby shopping opportunities include Model T Plaza and Highland Park Place, two shopping strips that offer retail chains like Citi Trends and DTLR.

Community gatherings at “The Pit”
Named for a decorated staff sergeant killed in the line of duty during World War II, Joseph Twork Park holds benches, swing sets and a playground with a small, domed climbing wall. At the heart of Cadillac Heights, the Fleming-Minnesota Playlot — known locally as “The Pit” — serves as a gathering place for community members of all ages. The open space offers a horseshoe pit, picnic tables and public grills. During the winter, residents can head to nearby Farwell Field, home of the Farwell Recreation Center. The center’s indoor facility hosts a list of activities ranging from music lessons to group exercise classes.

Homes of Cadillac Heights
Mixed among the abandoned homes and vacant lots familiar to many of Detroit’s neighborhoods, the bungalows, cottages and ranch-style homes of Cadillac Heights sit on well-maintained lawns with the occasional neatly trimmed hedge. Brick facades and small front porches characterize the homes, which typically hold 1,000 square feet or less. This reflects the overall age of many homes in the neighborhood, as many date back to the early 1900s. Homes needing significant repairs can sell as low as $20,000, while updated or fully renovated homes can sell as high as $90,000.

Annual events fit for Motor City
The interstate gives Cadillac Heights residents direct access to Detroit’s biggest downtown events. Huntington Place hosts one of the automotive industry’s most popular events—The Detroit Auto Show. The show brings auto manufacturers from all over the world to the Motor City and showcases the latest in automotive design and technology. Run on the Detroit Street Circuit, a course laid out along stretches of Detroit’s downtown streets, the Detroit Grand Prix draws thousands of race fans to downtown Detroit for an exciting weekend of IndyCar racing.
Particular risks of crime
The CAP Index crime score for Cadillac Heights is 6 out of 10, slightly higher than the national score of 4. Higher numbers indicate a higher risk of crime, and data suggest that violent crimes pose the greatest risk in the neighborhood. While Luchy says he believes the neighborhood is safe, he says local law enforcement tends to be enthusiastic about their authority. “You can walk around without any problems,” he says. “But watch out for the police.”
