A residential neighborhood on the comeback
Technically, there is no college in College Park. The Northwest Detroit neighborhood’s namesake, Wayne County Community College, is just across the Southfield Freeway. And although the neighborhood has some blocks of vacant lots that still show signs of Detroit’s post-2008 trials and tribulations, College Park is one of several city neighborhoods where a comeback is clearly in progress.

Brick houses fill orderly blocks
Most houses in College Park were built in the 1940s, and the styles reflect that era in Detroit. Brick is prominent, whether houses are bungalows, Cape Cods or the occasional Tudor Revival. As was common then, lots have more space to the front and back than the sides – people will know their neighbors in this neighborhood. “The neighborhood is well-maintained,” says Donya Odom, owner of The Shop Experience coffee shop in College Park. Fixer-uppers and investment properties sell below $50,000, and houses ready for move-in range from around $60,000-185,000.

Long-time butchers and a brand-new coffee shop
There’s a mix of venerable and new businesses in College Park. Butcher shops Mini Mart Specialty Meats and Gourmet Food Center have served area customers for decades. Glory Super Market also serves neighborhood grocery needs. Mr. Corned Beef and Lon’s Coney Island each serve up Detroit favorites on Seven Mile Road. And one of the neighborhood’s newest additions is The Shop Experience – the only locally owned coffee shop in this part of Detroit’s West Side. “I wanted to connect with a community where people looked like me and offer people a great boutique coffee experience at a reasonable price,” says Odom, who opened the shop in July 2023. “You shouldn’t have to live in the University District or North Rosedale Park to have a coffee house that you could enjoy.”

Multiple parks for area children
Park space is plentiful here. Peterson Playfield, just across Greenfield Road from the neighborhood, has a large playground, a splash area, basketball courts, tennis courts, softball fields and a youth football field. There are three smaller parks inside College Park – Arthur Park, Bale Playground and Varier Playfield. All three parks have children’s play areas.

Major roads form neighborhood boundaries
The six-lane Southfield Freeway, which leads north to suburban Southfield and south to Allen Park, forms College Park’s western boundary. Re-opened library branch back in community life
One of the neighborhood’s oldest institutions is now one of its newest. The Detroit Public Library’s Jessie Chase Branch opened here in 1952 before closing during the Covid pandemic. After a four-year wait, the branch reopened in May 2024. Fellowship Chapel UCC church, which has a sanctuary that can accommodate 1,750 parishioners, is the neighborhood's largest gathering space. Fellowship Chapel offers boys and girls mentoring programs, Girl Scouts, and a variety of ministries.
