Ten miles from downtown Detroit, Farwell is coming up
Newly renovated homes are popping up in the eastern Detroit neighborhood of Farwell, so the community is enjoying growth while offering a lower cost of living than many on the western side. “It’s definitely up-and-coming and heading in the right direction,” says Paul Kizer, a Realtor with National Realty Centers who has owned and lived in several houses in the Detroit metropolitan area. In addition to refurbished homes, the neighborhood has a recreation center that was renovated in 2024 and a handful of restaurants, just 10 miles from downtown Detroit.
The Farwell Recreation Center and other community spaces
Farwell has two major parks north of Outer Drive East. Farwell Field is a large open green space with a pickleball court, a seasonal ice rink, walking trails and the Farwell Recreation Center. The recreation center holds a fitness center and gymnasium and hosts programs and activities like ceramics and senior games. Less than a mile east of Farwell Field, Dorais Playground has a play area for little ones. Smaller parks south of Outer Drive include the open green space Keith Slappy Park and the Syracuse Playground.
Homes with around 1,000 square feet built in the mid-20th century
The median year built for homes in Farwell is 1948, which helps keep the prices down. “If you want to get a bargain for your buck, this is the perfect area to look at,” Kizer says. Small brick bungalows and ranch-style homes with 1,000 to 1,200 square feet line the streets and cost between $20,000 and $140,000. While most of these properties were built between the 1940s and 1970s, some homes come newly remodeled and sell toward the higher end of the price spectrum. The median home sale price is $60,000, up 36% from the previous year.
Pershing offers programs for upcoming artists, police and military
Mason Academy has a C-minus grade on Niche and serves kindergarten through eighth grade. The academy provides after-school tutoring programs and one-to-one technology help for students who need extra support. Dove Academy of Detroit is a charter school that offers an option for elementary school students and is graded a D-minus. After Dove or Mason, students can attend Pershing High School, which earns a C-minus. The school offers a JROTC program and a police cadet program for students who want to join the military or serve their community. Through a partnership with the JDilla Music Foundation, the school also has a recording studio for its music department and encourages artistic avenues.
Tim Hortons coffee chain and nearby shopping downtown
On Mound Road, Tim Hortons coffee shop serves premium-blend coffee and pastries. BB’s Diner on Seven Mile is known for its smashed potatoes and fried turkey chops. Nicky D’s on Eight Mile offers a retro vibe with a full menu of classic American diner fare. The neighborhood’s grocery store, Diamond Dot, sits on the corner of East Lantz Street and Mound Road. While Farwell itself doesn’t have much retail, downtown Detroit is only 11 miles south and holds an abundance of opportunities – even for casual shopping trips. “Besides the park and public library, most of our fun comes from traveling into downtown,” Kizer says.
Interstate 75 and Van Dyke Avenue
Farwell’s gridded streets are wide enough for street parking, but most homes have a driveway. The roads boast an extensive network of sidewalks, and bus stops line Outer Drive East, Seven Mile Road and Eight Mile Road. For residents with their own cars, Interstate 75 is less than a mile west, and Van Dyke Avenue is less than half-a-mile east. By way of I-75, downtown Detroit is just over 11 miles away. The nearest 24-hour emergency care is at Ascension Macomb - Oakland Hospital, Madison Heights Campus, roughly 5 miles north.
Farwell Recreation Center events or major events downtown
In addition to group exercise and social programs like ballroom dancing, ceramics and sign language classes, the Farwell Recreation Center hosts annual events like Fall Fest and a yearly Christmas Party. For larger events, Farwell residents can journey downtown and catch a Detroit Lions football game at Ford Field or the Detroit Grand Prix IndyCar race the weekend after the Indy 500.
