Hawthorne Park offers easy access to the rest of Detroit
Hawthorne Park is one of North Detroit’s most unique neighborhoods, both for its immediate access to Interstate 75 and for its close ties to neighboring Highland Park. With both a Highland Park postal address and access to Detroit amenities, Hawthorne Park shares in both the histories and benefits of these two historic communities, while also overcoming their challenges. Neighborhood documentarian Chris Harden says, “Highland Park isn’t a neighborhood of Detroit, as it’s its own city, but there’s not much of a difference between the residential areas of Highland Park and much of the nearby residential areas of Detroit.” Hawthorne Park, recognized by the postal service to be a part of Highland Park, bridges these two communities. Highland Park’s Chrysler Drive – named for the town’s most famous contribution to American automaking – merges with Interstate 75 along Hawthorne Park’s western edge, and these roads provide residents with easy access to the rest of Metro Detroit.

Vintage homes and streets shaded by elm trees
While Highland Park has faced difficulties since Chrysler’s move out of Detroit, Hawthorne Park retains a degree of the original charm of one of 1920s America’s model cities. Harden says, “Highland Park used to be called ‘the City of Trees,’ as the residential blocks were full of elm trees.” Hawthorne Park’s streets are lined with homes dating to the pre-World War II heyday of the Motor City, with streets still shaded by verdant trees. Homes in Hawthorne Park tend to sell for between $20,000 and $80,000, with refurbished homes topping the market and older homes offering competitive pricing offers.
