Bordered on one side by a collection of industrial businesses and the Detroit Detention Center, Krainz Woods attracts local workers with its mid-century homes, but it also boasts some interesting contributions to history. Running nearly through the center of the neighborhood is Keystone Street, where civil rights leader Malcolm X lived during the formative years of his political movement. Nevada Avenue is also home to Sojourner Truth Homes, the public housing project that birthed legendary Motown groups The Dramatics and The Floaters.
Ranch homes on narrow lots
Reflecting the neighborhood’s rich history, homes in Krainz Woods were primarily built between the 1940s and the 1960s. Ranch homes like the one-time home of Malcolm X are popular throughout the neighborhood, with colonial and Tudor-style homes adding variety to the scene. With many homes selling after complete renovations, prices vary widely. Homes needing work can sell as low as $20,000, while fully restored homes can sell as high as $140,000. In 2024, the median home price was $64,000, up 83% from 2023. Denetra Johnson, Realtor with EXP Realty, says the area is a good opportunity for homebuyers looking for a fixer-upper. “It’s an area that could be up and coming,” she says. “It’s a nice working-class neighborhood.”
Taylor Made Burgers and Royal Fresh Market on 7 Mile
Just off Nevada Avenue, Nevada Coney Island serves popular Coney Island fare 24 hours a day, six days a week. Seven Mile is home to the locally loved Taylor Made Burgers, known for its burgers and fried shrimp. “Taylor Made is the best over here,” says Mook, a receptionist at Inner City Bleu’s Classic Cutz. Shopping requires a short trip, as the closest grocery store is Royal Fresh Market off 7 Mile, a mile and a half west. Further north, the Belmont Shopping Center on 8 Mile holds retail chains like Foot Locker and DTLR.
Krainz Park and Syracuse-Hildale Playground
The neighborhood and Krainz Park at its heart both earn their name from the World War II hero John Krainz, Jr., who was born in Detroit and killed in action in the Philippines. Krainz Park covers almost three blocks between Hildale Street and Stockton Avenue, holding a basketball court, playgrounds and walking trails. On the neighborhood’s east side, the Syracuse-Hildale Playground offers another space for a playground and basketball court.
Access to the Detroit bus system and Interstate 75
Alongside the tree-lined residential streets of Krainz Woods, sidewalks cross over the occasional driveway and connect to larger roads like Seven Mile and Nevada Street. Bus stops along these busier thoroughfares give residents access to the Detroit public bus system and the city at large. Little more than two miles west, Interstate 75 puts the Detroit Medical Center 6 miles away and downtown Detroit approximately 9 miles away. Van Dyke lies a mile east and offers a secondary way into the city by connecting to Gratiot Avenue.
STEM programs at Mason Academy
Students can attend Mason Academy for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Earning a C-minus on Niche, the school offers opportunities for students to explore multiple career options through different STEM-related programs. During Black History Month, Mason’s students participate in Black History projects and learning experiences, including performances by a local step team. The neighborhood’s charter school, Legacy Charter Academy, also offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Students can then attend Pershing High School, which offers robotics programs and ACT prep courses. Pershing High also earns a C-minus.
Ford Field and Huntington Place
Downtown Detroit offers a full calendar of events just 9 miles south of Krainz Woods. Football fans can tailgate or catch a Detroit Lions game at Ford Field.
