Faith-based community organization Life Builders Detroit has spent the last 15 years leading the neighborhood revitalization. Their efforts include constructing new parks, an early childhood education facility, youth programs and rehabbing over 80 homes and commercial properties. The Strategic Neighborhood Fund has also targeted this area as part of their initiative to revive communities across Detroit.

Save A Lot neighborhood location for groceries
On Park Grove Street, The Haven Family Center hosts adult game nights, safe youth lunches and weekly wellness suppers. Maple Ridge borders the Seven Mile and Gratiot corridors, with many long-standing local businesses. Afro-Centric Connections has a selection of apothecary items and accessories sourced from Africa. In addition to local shops, Foot Locker and Dollar General are nearby. Save A Lot is the nearby supermarket, and Sea World Fish Market specializes in fresh seafood. On Gratiot Avenue, Capers is a steakhouse serving the community since 1982, known for its specials and “steaks by the ounce.” For meals to go, Lape Soul Food is a carryout-only spot offering Southern delicacies such as fried catfish and cornbread muffins.

The 11-acre Heilmann Park shares a campus with Fisher Magnet Upper Academy and Lower Academy. The Heilmann Recreation Center has amenities from a gym and pool to programs for archery and ceramics.
