Community fun in Clark Park
Several parks with playgrounds are within walking distance of Mexicantown, including the popular Clark Park. Situated in the neighboring Hubbard Farms neighborhood, this park features a variety of amenities including playscapes, covered picnic areas and open space for sports. In the summer, neighborhood kids cool off at the splash pad and play with friends at the playscapes. The basketball court and soccer field are often packed with neighbors competing to the finish, and the picnic areas are occupied by families looking to take in some fresh air. In the winter, the park features a regulation-size outdoor ice-skating rink that draws residents from across Southwest Detroit. The Clark Park Coalition also hosts annual events in the park, like the Winter Carnival and Summer Arts and Culture Festival.

Ample education options
Mexicantown offers a variety of learning options, from kids starting prekindergarten to adults looking to obtain a GED. Kids may attend Amelia Earhart Elementary-Middle School, which has a C-minus on Niche. Housed in a new $22 million building, Earhart serves students from kindergarten to eighth grade and is known for a rigorous study program that incorporates science, technology, engineering and art into the curriculum. Another popular middle school in the area is Clippert Multicultural Magnet Honors Academy, which has a C rating on Niche. Western International High School also holds a C rating and serves ninth through twelfth grade students. The high school offers various career pathway programs including technology, engineering and clinical health. It also offers vocational programs and a credit recovery option. Western’s baseball team is highly touted, winning 15 straight city championships. Every one of these schools also features programs for Spanish-speaking students including bilingual student resources and language immersion programs. For those looking for a fresh start, Covenant High School Southwest offers new opportunities to earn a high school diploma to high school dropouts and at-risk youth.

While the generations of historical and cultural community run deep in Mexicantown, 66% of Mexicantown residents are renters. Two major highways and several other commuting options
This neighborhood is very compact and features ample paved sidewalks and bike lanes, making it a highly walkable and bikeable community. Commuters can easily hop on the Michigan Highway, known as the M-5, or Interstates 75 or 96 to get into and out of the area, the Vernor bus and Joy Road bus serve the area. During standard commute hours, traffic is very heavy. Some students walk to school to avoid the rush hour jam.
Cinco De Mayo Festival and The Blessing of the Lowriders
Along with its authentic Mexican cuisine, this neighborhood is known for the lively events it hosts throughout the year, like the Cinco de Mayo Parade that has run between Clark and Patton parks for more than 50 years. This vibrant tradition attracts residents from every corner of Southwest Detroit to enjoy the celebration. And of course, there’s always a car show in the Motor City. The Blessing of the Lowriders began in 1997 and is now held each year the week after the Cinco de Mayo Parade. It features a car show and was originally conceived to combat the stereotype of cyclists being gang members. Children’s bicycles are also blessed during this event.
Community development and preservation
Along with organizations like the Clark Park Coalition, the Mexicantown Community Development Corporation has worked tirelessly to provide community, cultural, and art events to Mexicantown since 1989. Located in the Mexicantown Plaza del Norte Welcome Center, this organization is a leader in the revitalization, preservation and continued development of southwest Detroit.
