New Center
Suburban Neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan
Wayne County 48202
Luxury condos and historic houses
The history of New Center can be traced through its homes. The area originally served as a respite from downtown Detroit from the late 19th century through the early 20th. Many well-off families moved into the neighborhood’s desirable American Foursquare and Arts and Crafts homes. As the area grew in population, some of the original houses were cleared to make way for condominiums and apartments, and many remaining ones were turned into multi-unit housing. Today, those looking to move into the neighborhood can find studio condos for as little as $100,000 or more luxurious 3-bedroom units from the mid $200,000s. Single-family homes rarely come on the market, but when they do, they don’t last long and cost around $500,000.Playing at Pallister Park
The largest green space in the neighborhood is Pallister Park, adjacent to the narrow Pallister strip of refurbished single-family homes. New Center kids play at the small jungle gym and play sports across the large field, while residents looking to get a workout in utilize the pull-up bars. Otherwise, locals can join one of the nearby gyms or workout spaces, such as Orangetheory or Planet Fitness.Students in Detroit public schools
In New Center, students attend Thirkel Elementary-Middle School and Northwestern High School, each graded a C-minus by Niche. At Northwestern, ninth-graders can choose a course of study for their high school years, such as health sciences, business, community leadership, or engineering. Just down the street from New Center is Wayne State University, which enrolls just over 16,000 undergraduates. Wayne State’s athletic teams, known as the Warriors, compete in NCAA Division II.“Detroit’s largest art object”
One of the landmarks of New Center is the Fisher Building, sometimes referred to as “Detroit’s largest art object.” The tallest building in Detroit outside of downtown, it was designed by architect Albert Kahn and completed in 1928. It includes retail and professional offices, as well as the Fisher Theater, home of Broadway in Detroit. “It’s one of our bigger theaters, and they put on high-quality shows,” Kimber says. “When Hamilton came to Detroit, the show was there.” Across from the Fisher Building, New Center Park hosts outdoor movie nights each Friday throughout the summer.Convenience to work and entertainment
Near all Detroit has to offer, residents enjoy New Center’s convenience. Steps away from the neighborhood, the QLINE’s northern terminus stops at Woodward Avenue and Grand Boulevard. A free streetcar system, the QLINE runs through Detroit and has access to midtown and downtown. Many residents work at the nearby Henry Ford Hospital and can walk or bike there easily. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport sits a little less than 20 miles away for those looking to escape the cold winter weather or travel for business. Detroit is a major hub for Delta Air Lines, including routes to Europe and Asia.A shopping and dining destination
One of New Center’s draws is its abundance of shopping and dining. Woodward Avenue, the neighborhood’s east border, offers plenty of top-notch eateries, such as Joe Louis Southern Kitchen, a brunch spot named for the famed boxer from Detroit. Across the street, the highly-regarded Baobab Fare has been recognized by Eater Magazine Detroit for its East African bites, while Cuisine in the heart of the neighborhood serves elevated European classics. Meanwhile, both the Fisher Building and New Center One house retail locations — such as The Fashion Place and Pure Detroit, known for its Detroit-themed apparel — as well as office space for Henry Ford Hospital. And the adjacent Cadillac Place, once home to General Motors’ headquarters, now holds many of the City of Detroit’s services.
