Nolan
Suburban Neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan
Wayne County 48203, 48234
Increasing green space
Nolan is home to a few parks, which the city is working to improve by providing much-needed funding. What was a barren patch of grass just a few years ago, Charleston-Colton Park is now a small park where Nolan kids can slide, swing or climb the jungle gym. With a gazebo and a basketball court, the rest of the family can hit the park and relax in the shade or join a pickup game. In addition to current parks, the neighborhood is getting more green space. Ligon’s organization aims to build a 2.25 acre Therapy Forest—a forested space for residents to connect with nature and mentally recharge—and has already planted more than 100 trees around the city. The city of Detroit is also planning a park near the intersection of East State Fair Avenue and Hanna Street, and the neighborhood’s sidewalks will connect to the upcoming Joe Louis Greenway, a 27.5-mile pathway connecting parks and neighborhoods all over Detroit. “My heart is still here and with the rest of the Detroit neighborhoods that can use a little greenery to help brighten up the block,” Ligon says.Front row seats for Detroit’s biggest car show
Downtown Detroit is less than 10 miles away, so Nolan is close to the city’s most significant events. The city’s deep roots in the automotive industry make the North American International Auto Show one of the most popular events in the city, attracting car enthusiasts from all over the world.A variety of national and local businesses
Nolan is mainly filled with homes, but the commercial area around the intersection of Dequindre Road and 8 Mile Road gives residents a choice of chains like McDonald’s and Popeye’s. Motown Brunch House and Fish King provide locally-owned dining options. Just beyond the neighborhood’s Westside, Meijer serves the area with fresh produce and other grocery items. The neighborhood's southwest corner offers a few shopping options, like Tha Hot Spot, a women’s clothing store, and Royal Palace Mall, which holds a collection of small clothing stores.Mentoring for young students
As part of the Detroit Public Schools Community School District, Nolan students can attend pre-kindergarten through 8th grade at Nolan Elementary-Middle School. Nolan Elementary-Middle gives students the opportunity to work with mentors through programs like Pretty Brown Girls, BluCar Mentorship Program and The Knight Courtyard. The school earns a C-minus on Niche. Pershing High School offers grades 9 through 12 and earns a C-minus.City buses and a national highway
Nolan residents can easily access the Detroit Department of Transportation bus system thanks to bus stops throughout the neighborhood. Interstate 75 runs through the neighborhood, so Nolan drivers can easily connect to the nation’s network of highways. For walkers, the area is replete with sidewalks, which will soon connect residents to other neighborhoods and parks around the city via the Joe Louis Greenway.Homebuyers should be ready to work
Nolan's architecture mostly comes in compact designs like ranch-style homes and bungalows. Homes come with brick or vinyl siding or some combination of different facades. The neighborhood holds an abundance of homes that need repairs, meaning homes in Nolan tend to sell for less than $100,000. Programs like the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) are helping needed repairs and improvements along by providing funding for the demolition and rehabilitation of vacant properties and existing homes. Since the inception of such programs, Nolan residents have applied with vigor, ensuring that funding from programs like the NSP are used to repair and rebuild homes in Nolan. Ligon’s organization alone has renovated 30 properties and converted a once-vacant home into studios for youth to learn vital skills like cooking. The median home price is $52,250, up 5% from the previous year. Homes can range from $10,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home needing substantial repairs to $120,000 for a fully renovated bungalow.Data shows a high risk of crime
Data from Risk Factor indicates a high crime risk in Nolan. The neighborhood’s CAP Index score, which assesses the likelihood of crime occurring in the area, is a 9 out of 10. For comparison, the overall score for the US is 4.
