Nolan is a prime example of Detroit’s community-inspired resilience. The neighborhood is almost exclusively residential but enjoys a surrounding mix of national and local stores and restaurants. “The Nolan neighborhood is a great place to live, work and raise a family,” says Tharmond Ligon Jr, former Nolan resident and founder of Rescue Michigan Nature Now (RMNN), which aims to develop green spaces in Detroit communities and provide community educational programs focused on nature.

Increasing green space
Nolan is home to a few parks, which the city is working to improve by providing much-needed funding. What was a barren patch of grass just a few years ago, Charleston-Colton Park is now a small park where Nolan kids can slide, swing or climb the jungle gym. With a gazebo and a basketball court, the rest of the family can hit the park and relax in the shade or join a pickup game. In addition to current parks, the neighborhood is getting more green space. Ligon’s organization aims to build a 2.25 acre Therapy Forest—a forested space for residents to connect with nature and mentally recharge—and has already planted more than 100 trees around the city. The city of Detroit is also planning a park near the intersection of East State Fair Avenue and Hanna Street, and the neighborhood’s sidewalks will connect to the upcoming Joe Louis Greenway, a 27.5-mile pathway connecting parks and neighborhoods all over Detroit. “My heart is still here and with the rest of the Detroit neighborhoods that can use a little greenery to help brighten up the block,” Ligon says.

The neighborhood holds an abundance of homes that need repairs, meaning homes in Nolan tend to sell for less than $100,000. Programs like the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) are helping needed repairs and improvements along by providing funding for the demolition and rehabilitation of vacant properties and existing homes. Since the inception of such programs, Nolan residents have applied with vigor, ensuring that funding from programs like the NSP are used to repair and rebuild homes in Nolan. Ligon’s organization alone has renovated 30 properties and converted a once-vacant home into studios for youth to learn vital skills like cooking. The median home price is $52,250, up 5% from the previous year. Homes can range from $10,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home needing substantial repairs to $120,000 for a fully renovated bungalow.
