A former village still retains its green character within Detroit
Once called Norris, and later North Detroit, Detroit’s Nortown neighborhood carries on the legacy of a farming village established over 150 years ago. Nortown may be deeply immersed in urban Metro Detroit, but its quiet streets, scores of spaced-out brick cottages and lush front lawns evoke memories of an agrarian past.
With downtown Detroit located on the horizon, Norton benefits from its location near the city.
Beautiful homes with beautiful lawns are the primary feature of the Nortown neighborhood.

Brick cottages sell for competitive prices
Nortown was mainly developed from the 1920s to the early 1950s, and brick bungalows and cottages are found along every street. Many of these Federal-style homes have been well-maintained and renovated, adding freshness to a vintage housing stock. While original-quality homes tend to sell for between $29,000 and $100,000, remodeled properties garner sale prices between $103,000 and $170,000. Nortown stands out among its neighbors for its leafy character; front lawns tend to feature shrubbery and curbside trees, giving Nortown the appearance of a suburban neighborhood. However, Nortown does share the rest of the city's struggles; a CAP Index rating of 8 indicates a very high risk of crime.
Many of Nortown's brick cottages have been restored and receive good prices when put on sale.
Several Nortown streets feature larger, two-story homes that have been refurbished.

Old traditions come to life at family-run diners and a restored theater
Nothing speaks to Detroit’s unique culinary traditions like the Coney Island diner brand, and Nortown is home to Grandy’s Coney Island. Like many of its competitors, this diner is open 24 hours a day, serving up the classic “Coney Island hot dog” in addition to diner classics like Reuben sandwiches and eggs with bacon. Along Van Dyke Avenue, the family-owned Motown Café & Grill offers its own diverse menu that includes a hearty “Motown skillet” of breakfast foods. Though the 1950-built Bel-Air Drive-In may have closed in 1986, it has since been transformed into the Bel Air Luxury Cinema and offers a retro-themed moviegoing experience. Nortown is surrounded by supermarket options, including Joe Randazzo’s Fruit & Vegetable Market and the Pick & Save Supermarket.
Nortown's Joe Randozzo's Fruit and Vegetable Market is a delight for the eye and nose.
