Oak Grove blends quiet tree-lined streets with nearby conveniences

Oak Grove is a laidback, residential neighborhood that’s walking distance from leafy parks, local restaurants and an historic movie house. Grand Lawn Cemetery, a sprawling burial ground with lush stands of mature trees, occupies the western side of the district. “It’s really convenient to major highways and there’s a pretty big shopping strip there on Grand River Avenue,” says Realtor Kenneth Evans of Reach Realty Group, a western Detroit resident who has worked in the area for more than 14 years. “It's had its issues, but it’s encouraging to see how the city has transformed in the last decade.”

Homes sit on roomy lots with space to garden and renovate

Take a stroll through the Oak Grove’s tree-lined streets and you’ll find a range of early and mid-20th century architectural styles, including cozy Cape Cods, modest bungalows and eclectic Craftsman homes with wide front porches and thick columns. Mid- and large-sized lots are common here, so you’ll have plenty of room for landscaping and gardening in the spring and summer. Some homes have been well-maintained by their owners over the years, while others could use some improvements. Prices typically range from around $50,000 to $150,000, although some homes in need of major renovations have sold for $30,000 or less.

A trail system plans to connect parks across the area

Public parks and green spaces are close to home for many residents. You can relax outdoors at James T. Hope Playfield Park, a local park with walking trails, a playground and grassy lawns for picnicking. Right next door to the park is the Crowell Recreation Center, a local community space where you can take advantage of indoor fitness equipment and a gym or participate in social activities and classes. Just a few blocks away, there’s also Riordan Park, a small park with sport courts, a playground and winding walking trails. A large passive park nearby, known as the Rouge Valley Parkway, could see major improvements in the coming years — the Rouge River Greenway is proposed to cut through the area and could eventually provide up to 12 miles of riverside trails.

A specialty school nearby focuses on arts and sciences

Students can attend Emerson Elementary-Middle School and Ford High School, both of which hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Students who excel in arts and science courses might prefer the Charles Wright Academy of Arts and Science, a highly-sought-after specialty school serving kindergarten through eighth grade. If you’re looking for the latest long read, you can head less than a mile away to the Redford branch of the Detroit Public Library.

West African food, breakfast spots and vintage films nearby

You’ll find dining and grocery options on nearby Grand River Avenue. Maty’s Cuisine is the perfect spot to try some West African cuisine, while those in the mood for a hearty breakfast can grab a table at Old Redford Café & Grill. You can catch a movie on the silver screen at The Redford Theatre, a vintage movie house that shows Hollywood classics and independent films all year-round. For groceries, there’s a Meijer supermarket and a Family Dollar where you’ll find everything you need. Big box stores like Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target and Costco can all be found within about 5 miles of the neighborhood.

Easy travel to Detroit via I-96 and local bus stops

The neighborhood is in the northwest suburbs of the city, but its proximity to major roadways and access to local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on Interstate 96 and it’s about 20 minutes to downtown Detroit. If you’re looking for a home in a suburban district with natural scenery and nearby amenities, you might consider Oak Grove.
