History mixed with a burgeoning art scene
Detroit’s neighborhood of Piety Hill earned its name from the supposedly high morals of its residents in the late 1800s. Once home to prominent Detroit residents, it’s an area that marches forward while still bearing scars of the past at places like Algiers Motel Location Park. Today, the historic architecture is wrapped in a strong sense of community and an emerging arts scene that draws residents in. “Piety Hill has beautiful, historic buildings, including churches, former mansions and grand residential structures,” says Marta Kopania, Realtor with 1st Michigan Real Estate. “Pop-up galleries, community art spaces and street art are increasingly visible in the area.”
The Piety Hill is only a 15-minute drive to Downtown Detroit.
The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament is the seat of the Archbishop of Detroit.

Large Victorians and other early 20th-century architectural styles
Piety Hill’s rich architectural history is part of the neighborhood’s appeal, Kopania says. “Many buildings date back to the early 20th century, giving the area a classic charm.” As early as the late 1800s, the community attracted professionals such as lawyers, physicians, and architects, whose reputed moral virtues led to the neighborhood coming to be known as “Piety Hill” during the Gilded Age. Today, stately American foursquare and Victorian homes built during that time sell with varying levels of repair needed. Some larger homes have been converted into duplexes, holding two separate units in one structure. The wide streets are lined with sidewalks, and since driveways are the exception, street parking is common. Homes needing substantial repairs can sell as low as $100,000, while fully renovated homes sell as high as $376,000.

Popular local restaurants and the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op
Piety Hill residents have access to fresh produce and other healthy foods thanks to the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op on Woodward Avenue. Woodward also holds a small collection of locally loved restaurants. For East African, there’s Baobab Fare, the founder of which was recently listed as a James Beard Award finalist in the outstanding restaurateur category. “Supino Pizzeria in New Center is absolutely a staple,” says Nevin Shaffer, a two-year resident of Piety Hill. “YumVillage is another favorite within the area as well.” Shaffer also says shoppers can find options at the Fisher Building, an ornate art deco building home to local shops like Peacock Room, a Detroit-based clothing store.

Algiers Hotel Location Park and other green spaces
The neighborhood holds a few options for green spaces where neighbors can be active and socialize. On Woodward Avenue is the former site of the Algiers Motel, where three Black American teenagers were murdered by police and military task forces responding to Detroit’s 12th Street Riot in 1967. The motel has since been torn down, and the site converted into Algiers Motel Location Park, a designated historical landmark that holds a placard detailing the events of the killings. It offers an open green space with tall trees that shade the grassy space. On West Philadelphia Street, McDuffy Park offers playground equipment, picnic tables and a walking trail. The open green space of Voigt Park lies just north of Piety Hill and holds a variety of mature, neatly manicured trees. Other outdoor experiences include an art installation at the intersection of Clairmount and 2nd Avenue, hinting at the neighborhood’s developing art scene.
Voigt Park is an ideal spot to walk your dog to for exercise.
Younger residents of Piety Hill will love the playground at McDuffy Park.

The neighborhood’s sidewalks and bus stops also give residents options for traveling without a vehicle.
