Riverdale is a Detroit suburb centered around convenience
If you’re looking for a home with walkability to leafy greenspaces and a trickling stream, you might consider Riverdale, a suburb in western Detroit. “People are here for the parks, the location and because there’s really good public transportation around this area if you don’t own a car,” says Realtor Tami Jo Schuetzler of Re/Max, who’s lived and worked in the Detroit metropolitan area for more than three decades. The neighborhood is in the northwest suburbs of the city, but its proximity to major roadways and access to local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on the bus or highway, and it’s about 20 minutes to downtown Detroit. With leafy streets and picturesque parks, Riverdale might the perfect place to put down roots.
Well-maintained 20th-century homes line the community
Take a drive through the area and you’ll see a wealth of early and mid-20th century architectural styles, including steep-roofed Tudor Revival homes, bungalows, ranch homes and Craftsman homes with wide front porches. “A lot of these homes are solidly built and have been well-maintained over the years,” Schuetzler says. Large lots are common, so you’ll have plenty of room for landscaping, gardening or the occasional backyard barbecue. And with sidewalks, mature trees and leafy foliage adorning the streets, it’s got a classic, suburban vibe that residents love. Prices typically range from around $50,000 to $125,000, although some homes in need of major improvements have sold for $30,000 or less.
Detroit Public Schools Community District serves the neighborhood
Students can attend Emerson Elementary-Middle School and Ford High School, both of which hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Students who excel in arts and science courses might prefer to attend Charles Wright Academy of Arts and Science, a highly-sought-after specialty school serving kindergarten through eighth grade.
Several parks are within walking distance of home
Wherever you live in this community, you’ll have walkable access to public greenspaces. You can relax outdoors at Riordan Park, a lovely little park with sport courts, a playground, and walking trails that wind across its grassy fields. You’re also just a few minutes from James T. Hope Playfield Park, Crowell Recreation Center and Eliza Howell Park, all of which offer plenty of room to roam on a nice day. The Rouge River Parkway also winds through the area. This large passive park that could see major improvements in the coming years: the Rouge River Greenway is proposed to cut through the area and could eventually provide 12 miles of riverside trails that will connect the neighborhood with nearby by parks and recreational amenities. Make sure you check out The Redford Theatre, a vintage movie house that shows Hollywood classics and independent films all year-round — whether you’ve got tickets to It’s a Wonderful Life during the holidays or an underground hit like Gremlins, there’s something for everyone.
Residents shop and dine along Grand River and Fenkell avenues
You’ll find plenty of dining and grocery options on nearby Grand River and Fenkell avenues, the closest commercial corridors to the neighborhood. Maty’s Cuisine is the perfect spot to try some West African cuisine, while those in the mood for comfort food can make a pitstop at Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips, an unassuming eatery known for its tasty fried fish, burgers and fried chicken. For groceries, there’s a Meijer supermarket where you’ll find everything you need. There’s also a weekly farmer’s market every Friday afternoon at nearby Brightmoor Artisans Collective, where you can pick up fresh produce and artisan goods from local vendors.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
