Schulze offers homes in west Detroit with plenty of community parks, nearby amenities and public schools for residents to enjoy. It’s less than a mile to the up-and-coming Bagley district, as well as several sought-after public magnet schools and Sinai-Grace Hospital, one of the largest medical centers in the city. “There are a lot of hospital employees that live there who want to be near Bagley, but don't want to pay Bagley prices,” says Realtor LaShawn Peterson of Exp Realty, a longtime Detroit area resident who has been working in real estate since 2016. “There are a lot of fixer-uppers and investment properties here, as well as some really well-kept homes.”

This residential district features sidewalks, manicured front lawns and mature trees with leafy foliage. There are a mix of smaller homes here, including brick Colonial Revival homes, cozy Cape Cods, sturdy bungalows and Tudor-inspired homes with steep-pitched rooftops and asymmetrical floorplans. Lot sizes are typically on the smaller side, but you’ll still have plenty of room for landscaping. Many of today's owners have lovingly maintained these homes over the years, making upgrades while retaining the home's original charm. Prices typically range from around $100,000 to $250,000 depending on the home’s square footage, age and renovation status.

Schulze also features several neighborhood parks where residents can get some fresh air outside. Van Antwerp Park offers sport courts, a playground and a lovely picnicking area for residents to enjoy, as does nearby Gemeiner Park. The Tindal Activity Center serves the community with classes and indoor activities, offering a safe space for neighborhood kids to spend with their friends. Residents can also gather at the Northwest Activities Center, which hosts classes and fun activities for all ages.

Students can attend Vernor Elementary School, Schulze Academy for Technology and the Arts for elementary and middle school and Mumford High School, all three of which hold C ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Students can also attend popular magnet schools just outside the neighborhood like Renaissance High School, which holds a B-rating from Niche. Students interested in international studies might check out The Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School, a K-8 public school with a C-plus rating where students can learn about French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese cultures. Nearby, locals might find refuge at the Bela Hubbard Branch of the Detroit Public Library.

Shopping and dining can be found on McNichols Road and Wyoming Avenue, the boulevards that traverse the southern and eastern edges of the neighborhood. Whatcha Wanna Eat? Food Hall offers a variety of vendors and cuisines to pick from, while the Deli Plaza Delicatessen offers authentic corn beef sandwiches. For early morning risers, Ooh Wee is a local coffeeshop that serves pastry and espresso drinks. For the necessities, there’s Family Dollar, Dollar General, Kroger and The Home Depot nearby, but residents will have to hop in the car and drive to big box stores and grocers like Walmart and Target.

The neighborhood’s proximity to major roadways and access to local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on U.S. Route 10, and it’s about 15 minutes to downtown Detroit. With cozy homes, parks and nearby schools, Schulze is a centrally located community worth considering.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
