Seven Mile-Rouge offers nature and city access in northwest Detroit
With an array of homes on leafy, residential streets, Seven Mile-Rouge could be the perfect place put down roots in northwestern Detroit. Bordered by Telegraph Avenue on one side and the winding, forested banks of the Rouge River on the other, you’ll get a dose of nature within reach of urban conveniences. “It’s off the beaten path, and you’ve got some well-maintained homes that you could pick up for an affordable price. There are also some really large lots there. It can feel like country living in the city,” says Towanna Jackson of Exp Realty, a longtime Detroit area resident who has been working in real estate since 2016.
Brick bungalows and ranch-style homes sit back from tree-line streets
Take a stroll through the neighborhood and you’ll see sidewalks, manicured lawns and tall trees adorning front and backyards that flourish in the spring and summer months. Early and mid-20th century architectural styles are the most common home types here, including many brick bungalows, cozy, low-flung ranch homes and some Tudor-inspired designs with steep pitched rooftops and asymmetrical floorplans. Lots are typically between 5,000 and 7,000 square feet, so you’ll have plenty of room for landscaping, gardening or backyard barbecuing. Some homes have been meticulously maintained by their owners, while others could use significant upgrades. Prices typically range from around $50,000 to $115,000. There are also several apartment buildings in the neighborhood for those looking for something that requires less upkeep.
Detroit Public Schools Community District serves the neighborhood
Students can attend Emerson Elementary-Middle School and Ford High School, both of which are in the Detroit school district and hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Students interested in receiving a specialty education might prefer to attend Wright Charles Academy of Arts and Science, an elementary and middle school that Niche has designated a standout city school with a B rating.
Outdoor recreation includes cricket, tennis and golf
Nearby, you can get some fresh air at the Mirage Cricket Ground, a large open space with grassy fields and woodlands that borders the Rouge River. Head about a mile north and you can enjoy Beech Woods Park and Recreation Center, a large community space with tennis courts, a playground and plenty of urban greenery to take in. You’re also just a few miles from Plum Hollow Country Club, a members-only club with a resort-style pool, picturesque golf greens and a luxury clubhouse.
Residents dine and run errands within 2 miles of home
Within Seven-Mile Rouge, you can stop off for breakfast or lunch at Motor City Coney Island, a laidback neighborhood diner, or grab a table at View Bar & Grill on Grand River Avenue, a lively dinner destination with drinks and downhome cooking. For groceries and everyday essentials, there’s a Family Dollar and CVS pharmacy. For everything else, there’s an Aldi and a Meijer supermarket within 2 miles of the neighborhood. Big box stores like Costco, Walmart, Home Depot and Target can be found about 6 miles away at the Millenium Park shopping plaza.
Telegraph Avenue supports quick commutes
Although Seven Mile-Rouge is in the outskirts of the city, its proximity to major roadways makes it easy to get around the city. “It’s right near Telegraph Avenue, which will get you anywhere you need to go, whether you’re heading to downtown Detroit or the suburbs. It’ll take you right to Interstate 96,” Jackson says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
