Sherwood Forest is a historically affluent area with curb appeal, a close community and a central location. Lisa Funchess, a realtor with AtProperties Christie's International and Sherwood resident describes what it’s like to walk through the neighborhood, “The homes are beautiful and have such rich history,” she says. “You can smell flowers because people are about their business when it comes to landscaping. You will look up and see a canopy of trees, like it really is like a forest.”
And along with physical allure, Sherwood Forest has a community of residents who take pride in their neighborhood. “My neighbors have been here for 20 to 30 years,” says Funchess. “If you’re looking for a forever home, a forever place to live with community, this is the place. This is not a flip neighborhood; this is a place to settle roots.”
Avenue of Fashion and Woodward
Residents walk over to the Livernois Avenue of Fashion for shopping, dining and services. Mike’s Fresh Market offers fresh groceries, while stores like CVS offer everyday essentials. There’s also a broad range of dining options including Pequeno Cantina. The restaurant is a newer addition to The Ave but has quickly become a local favorite, serving classic Mexican cuisine in a modern setting. The intersection of Woodward and 8 Mile is about a 10-minute drive from the neighborhood and features big box stores like Meijer and Marshalls.
Historic houses on 4,000 square foot lots
Historic homes dating back to the 20s sit on about one-tenth of an acre. Colonial, Tudor and Victorian Revival styles are the most common finds, but there are also Mediterranean and French-influenced styles. Long paved driveways and backyard garages provide room for off-street parking. Most homes were built between the 1920s and 30s, but there are also a few houses built in the mid-50s.
Prices range from about $170,000 for about 2,000 square feet and $675,000 for about 6,000. The actual cost will depend on the size, year built and level of renovations done. Historic, 1920s and 30s homes tend to sell for more than homes built in the 50s. Due to the age and history of the homes in Sherwood Forest, there are several stipulations around renovations that can be made.
Palmer Park and Detroit Golf
Palmer Park is just a short walk from the neighborhood and offers over 290 acres of recreation. The tennis court, disc golf course and basketball court attract crowds of competitive neighbors and those looking to hone their skills. Kids enjoy spending time at the playscape and splashpad during warm summers, and the picnic areas are commonly used for reunions, parties and small get-togethers. The 2.5 walking trail is a green retreat in the midst of a busy city. With stretching oak and beech trees that climb high above the trails, there’s a deep wooded feel. The Detroit Golf Club is also nearby and offers two 18-hole Donald Ross-designed courses and an exclusive clubhouse.
Year-round community events
Friendly community events throughout the year keep residents engaged. “People open their homes for picnics and potlucks,” says Funchess. “We have a park beautification where we come together with our bags and rakes and play flowers and clean up. There’s an annual barbeque.”
There are also several clubs designed to build comradery, including a flower club and walking group. “There are so many things that have been put in place so neighbors can get closer with neighbors,” says Funchess. “It’s encouraged with everything the association does.”
Walking, biking and driving to get around
The neighborhood’s compact layout and clean paved sidewalks make it easy to walk to get around. There are also bike lanes along the main streets. Buses running along Livernois, 7 Mile, McNichols and Woodward make commuting around the city a breeze. There's also a brand new transit center at the intersection of 8 Mile and Woodward, making it easy for riders to get anywhere in Detroit. Major freeways like The Lodge and Interstate 75 are about 3 miles away, meaning they’re close enough to access without dealing with the noise. “I would say one of the main reasons people gravitate toward Sherwood is its central location,” says Funchess.
Nearby public and private schools
Nearby public schools include Bates Academy, which has a B-minus rating on Niche and serves pre-k through 8th graders. The elementary-middle school is mostly known for its caring teachers and high test scores. Mumford High School is also nearby, with a C rating. Many opt for private schools as well, including Gesu Catholic School, which has not been rated on Niche.
