Sherwood offers convenient living on Detroit's northern side

Sherwood is a small community situated on Detroit’s northern edge. Though separated from downtown, its location along 8 Mile Road provides quick access to the shopping and dining options that fill the corridor. Green spaces like Dorais Playground and Farwell Park are also nearby, within 2 miles of the community. Homebuyers can expect convenient commutes into the city’s center and midcentury homes with comparatively lower price points. “It’s a very quiet, well-established community,” says Theresa Humes, a Realtor with Real Estate One-Southfield, who grew up in the neighborhood. “It’s also a draw for buyers to be close to 8 Mile Road.”

Short trips lead to 8 Mile Road shopping and dining

Several chain restaurants, such as White Castle and Nicky D’s, sit back from 8 Mile Road, which frames the community’s northern side. Belmont Shopping Center retailers, including Five Below and DTLR, sit back from the corridor, 3 miles west. Van Dyke Road directly east offers similar amenities. The locally owned Me & My Girls Soul Food serves Southern comfort food. A Pick & Save Supermarket is available less than a mile away on Seven Mile Road for grocery hauls.

Bungalows and ranch-style homes fill the community

Sherwood encompasses one square mile, stretching from an industrial sector directly west to Van Dyke Road toward the east. Its gridded streets feature narrow sidewalks and high-reaching canopies of mature trees. Bungalows and ranch-style homes built during the early mid-20th century line the community. Most come with brick-clad exteriors, each with a detached garage in the backyard. Sherwood’s home values are less than half the Detroit Metro Area average. Prices typically range from $25,000 for a property needing repair to $200,000 for a recently renovated home.

Dorais Playground, Farwell Park and Bel Air Luxury Cinema are all close to home

Dorais Playground on Mound Road features a small playground and an old velodrome. It’s also home to Derby Hill, one of the city’s only hills, a busy sledding spot in the winter. Humes says the green space is popular alongside Farwell Park, which is less than a mile west. The park offers pickleball and basketball courts, a community garden and the Farwell Recreation Center. “The center does a lot of community activities, including stuff for seniors,” Humes says. Locals can also catch a movie at Bel Air Luxury Cinema on 8 Mile Road.

Osborn High School students can earn college credits

Detroit Public Schools Community District serves the neighborhood and receives a C on Niche. The district also offers school choice, allowing enrollment at any district school. Marion Law Academy earns a C-minus and teaches prekindergarten through eighth grade. Osborn High School also scores a C-minus. “A lot of people in the area like the high school,” Humes says. Osborn students can earn college credits through accelerated programs, which include dual enrollment, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses.

Main roads and public transit provide easy commutes to downtown

Humes says that commuting downtown is convenient. Locals can reach the district along a 10-mile drive south via Van Dyke and Gratiot avenues. Detroit Department of Transportation services bus stops on surrounding main roads, connecting riders to the city's center and the greater area. The neighborhood is 4 miles east of Interstate 75 and a similar distance north of Interstate 94.

Detroit Police Department regularly meets with the community

Sherwood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 8 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. The Detroit Police Department runs community engagement sessions and crime prevention programs, including Project Green Light Detroit. Through the initiative, local businesses share live camera footage with police for real-time surveillance.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
