Wildemere Parks gets a surge of new life near vibrant city life
Wildemere Park offers homes in an urban residential area of Detroit with streets that extend out towards the city’s vibrant downtown district. It’s bordered by Grand Boulevard, known to residents simply as “The Boulevard,” which will take you to the city’s lively art institutions, museums and historical sites. Leonard Pickett, broker and owner of RCH Brokerage, says the neighborhood is starting to see a resurgence amid an uptick in home purchases and renovations. “It’s a great location right next to the interstate and Northwestern High School. You can get to downtown in 10 minutes,” Pickett says.
Renovated classic Craftsman homes and multi-family properties
Take a drive through the neighborhood’s streets and you’ll see an array of early 20th century Craftsman homes known for their dormer windows and wide front porches in addition to some brick two-story homes. With lot sizes of above 3,000 square feet, you’ll have plenty of room for landscaping, gardening and backyard barbecues. There are also several small multifamily buildings in the neighborhood for those seeking something with less upkeep. Some of the homes in this area have been renovated and upgraded with modern amenities and others need significant improvements. Homes in need of major repairs can sell for as little as $2,500 while well-maintained dwellings can sell for between $50,000 and $110,000. For residents who want to stay involved, there’s an active neighborhood association that meets on a regular basis to discuss local issues.
Public education options close to home
Students in the neighborhood can attend Thirkell Elementary School and Middle School and Northwestern High School, which both hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. An array of famous alumni have graduated from Northwestern High, including former United States House Representative John Conyers and soul musicians like James Jamerson and Mary Wells who were pivotal players for Motown Records.
Convenience to outdoor recreation and cultural landmarks
While there are no parks in the neighborhood, you’re just a short walk or drive from Bishop Park, a large park with baseball diamonds and grassy meadows, and the Bishop DIY Skatepark. You’re also just a few blocks from LaSalle Park, a community park with landscaped walking paths and mature trees where you can get some fresh air. Williams Recreation Center, less than a mile away, offers indoor activities year-round, including boxing lessons and swimming.
Head just three miles east, and you’ll find yourself in Midtown, one of the city’s bustling cultural districts. This area is full of history, educational institutions, art, upscale eateries, cafes, boutique shops and several large medical centers. While you're there, you can enjoy the eclectic sculptures at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit or take the kids for romp through the planetarium at the Michigan Science Center. You might also pay a visit to the Motown Museum, a cultural landmark with a colorful collection of artifacts that celebrates the record label’s legacy.
Midtown offers diverse mix of restaurants and essential stops
In Midtown, you might have a hard time picking a spot for lunch or dinner; there's a range of Asian, Italian, Mexican and upscale options to choose from. Grey Ghost is the perfect spot for a craft cocktail and a New York strip steak, while those in the mood for something casual might grab a beer and an appetizer from HopCat. For groceries and everyday essentials, there’s a Whole Foods and Walgreens within about 3 miles.
A quick commute to downtown Detroit
Commuters have it easy in Wildemere Park — the neighborhood is just a few blocks away from on on-ramp for Interstate 96. Hop on the highway and you’re about 6 miles from downtown Detroit, and about 6 miles from Dearborn. There are also bus stops along Linwood Street and Grand Boulevard for those who prefer public transportation.
