A charming small town just 10 miles from Ann Arbor
Picture all the small-town charm, local eateries, walkable downtown streets, kayaking waterways and bicycle trails of Ann Arbor at a slower pace of life and there’s Dexter. The community of Dexter is easily within commuting distance of Ann Arbor’s busy downtown and the University of Michigan, but far enough away to enjoy both breathing room from the bustle and lower average home prices. “It’s a pretty rural area,” says Realtor Tammy Lehman with Lehman and Scheffler Real Estate Services. “But there’s still local activities and its close to Ann Arbor.”
A historic downtown with beloved local businesses
Dexter’s downtown is easy to explore and easy to love. Historic storefronts and red brick sidewalks still greet locals and visitors who frequent local shops and convenience stores, from sporting goods legend The Painted Trout to Busch’s Fresh Food Market. Residents can ask for an outdoor table at Dexter Riverview Café to greet their neighbors as they enjoy a leisurely brunch. At Dexter Pub, residents can sample their favorite brews and a classic pub menu, from generous burgers to smoked brisket. Another local favorite is The Encore Musical Theatre Company, an award-winning professional theater that draws crowds from the surrounding area. Jenny’s Farm Stand and Cider Mill brings fall-time memories and petting zoo excitement to the edge of the Dexter city limits. The community gathers for several annual festivals and events, including Dexter Daze, a summertime celebration that fills downtown Dexter with live music, children’s events and fireworks.
The Dexter Creamery offers a variety of soft-serve flavors with over 70 toppings.

A cycling enthusiast's playground
Whether residents are hiking, cycling, kayaking or just enjoying the outdoors, Mill Creek Park is a great place to start. The riverside recreation area not only has a kayak launch and peaceful views, but it is on the Border-to-Border Trail, a 35-mile bicycle pathway that can take you past Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti. Residents can follow the trail and the Huron River north to find the Hudson Mills Metropark Golf Course, a favorite for local golf enthusiasts since 1989.
