A rural part of Dinwiddie County primed for growth
In central Dinwiddie County, DeWitt has more farmland and undeveloped woods than homes. “It’s very country,” says JC Realty’s Jeremy Cecchettini, a Realtor with nearly a decade of experience in the Petersburg-Colonial Heights-Hopewell market. “This area is a real growth opportunity for Dinwiddie County, because the North Dinwiddie, Tri-Cities areas are getting too populated, and DeWitt is one of the only areas left to grow,” he says.
Single-family homes on acreage properties
Thick groves of pines and oaks separate DeWitt’s single-family homes from each other and the street. Common housing styles include classic ranch and New Traditional, though rustic farmhouses, modest Cape Cods and manufactured homes are available as well. The average lot size is about an acre. Prices start around $100,000 and can climb to $790,000, depending on the home’s square footage and the property’s acreage.
DeWitt students attend Dinwiddie County Public Schools
Students here can attend Dinwiddie County Public Schools. The district does not allow school choice, and most kids attend Dinwiddie Elementary, Dinwiddie Middle and Dinwiddie High. The elementary and high schools earn B-minus grades from Niche. The middle school earns a C-plus. Dinwiddie High offers career and technical education courses in subjects such as business, information technology and agriculture.
Rocky Run Ruritan Club events, youth baseball and more
The Rocky Run Ruritan Club anchors central DeWitt, hosting regular events like community dinners and open-air concerts. Rocky Run Ballpark, less than a mile up Glebe Road, is home to the Rocky Run Athletic Association’s youth baseball team. Built in 1947, the field is the oldest in Dinwiddie County. The Robert & Betty Ragsdale Community Center, less than 7 miles away, features indoor recreational amenities like a CrossFit exercise room, fitness studio and children’s play areas. The rec center is near McKenney Gymnasium, an indoor basketball court with bleachers.
Petersburg has the closest shopping and dining options
Beyond Larry’s Gun Repair and a few other small businesses, there are no retailers in DeWitt, so residents must go to Petersburg for groceries and other shopping. There’s a Food Lion and a Tractor Supply on Boydton Plank Road, heading northeast toward the city. Popular restaurants in Petersburg proper, like Joe’s Steak & Seafood and Brother’s Pizza, are almost 20 miles away.
Limited bus service but quick access to U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 85
The Dinwiddie Express Bus picks up from a stop at the DeWitt post office. The route provides service to McKenney and several destinations north, including Dinwiddie Government Center and Dinwiddie Health & Rehabilitation Center. U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 85 run parallel, heading northeast toward Petersburg. Major regional employers, like Amazon fulfillment and Walmart distribution centers, are within about 15 miles of most homes. With no traffic, commuting takes about 20 minutes on either Route 1 or I-85. The 45-mile drive north to Richmond International Airport typically takes under an hour without traffic on Interstates 85 and 95. DeWitt’s CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
