Close-knit country community thrives in Ford
Ford is a rural community in northwest Dinwiddie County. It’s about 30 miles from Petersburg and 50 miles from Richmond. Outside of the occasional train passing through, Ford is quiet and doesn’t get much traffic beyond its main road, U.S. Route 460. Its sole establishments include a few local farms, about four churches, a gas station, a fire station and a post office. “It’s definitely for country, rural lifestyles,” says Josselin Cruz, a Realtor with 1st Class Real Estate. “It’s tranquil, and I’d also say it’s a close-knit, welcoming community. When I was selling there, I had so many neighbors just come by to stop and say hi. I’d also see people riding tractors to each other’s houses.”
Ford’s housing stock is limited
Land comes up for sale far more often than homes do in Ford. That said, when houses do come on the market, they range from around $100,000 to the high $700,000s. On the low end are older, smaller homes in need of a little TLC, like a vintage 1950s cottage. Renovated, move-in-ready properties generally start in the low $200,000s. Typical of the countryside, lots are spacious, usually measuring around an acre or more. Popular styles include Cape Cods and Minimal Traditional ranch-style homes.
Students attend the most sought-after elementary school in Dinwiddie County
Served by Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Ford is in the sought-after Midway Elementary school zone. The school earns a B-plus on Niche and ranks among the website’s top ten standout elementary schools in the Richmond area. Dinwiddie Middle is graded C-plus, and Dinwiddie High is rated a B-minus. The high school has career and technical education programs in agriculture, business and information technology, marketing, health sciences and more.
Ford is more than 20 minutes from the nearest park
Ford is just over a 15-mile drive from the closest park and recreation center. Dinwiddie Sports Complex is roughly a 20-minute drive from the heart of the neighborhood. It features a football stadium, a soccer stadium and four ballfields. The county’s Eastside Enhancement Center has a playground closer to 30 minutes away. For more outdoorsy recreation, Whippernock Marina & Campground is right on Lake Chesdin, about 15 miles away. The lake is a hub for fishing, boating and swimming.
Grocery and restaurant options in Blackstone
The closest grocery stores are Walmart and Food Lion in Blackstone, about 16 miles west. The town also has some locally owned eateries, such as Grill Sergeant VA BBQ. The newer spot has already found a home in the hearts and stomachs of locals with its classic Southern menu and cozy interior. Up the street, The Brew House is popular for its live music, karaoke nights and – of course – craft beer. For more extensive errand runs or for the closest emergency room, Petersburg is about 30 miles west.
A half-hour from Petersburg and an hour from Richmond
U.S. 460 intersects with Interstate 85, about 20 miles away, outside of Petersburg. A few miles farther, I-85 intersects with I-95, which is a direct route into Downtown Richmond, 50 miles away – roughly an hour-long drive depending on traffic. I-95 can take drivers most of the way to Richmond International Airport, also about an hour away.
