Sutherland combines outdoor recreation with rich history
Located along the highway from Petersburg to Appomattox, Sutherland is a community with deep historical roots. This deep-rural section of Dinwiddie County, where three battles of the American Civil War were fought, preserves the memories of its storied past through its strong emphasis on outdoor recreation. “People go to Pamplin Historical Park and the Five Forks battlefield all the time for hiking,” says David Patsel, a Realtor with Napier Realtors, ERA, who has sold several properties across Dinwiddie County. “Back in the Civil War days, the soldiers built a canal that ran parallel to the Appomattox River so they’d be able to get their supplies up and down the river. Portions of it are still there, and there’s a walking trail through that area.” Though Sutherland may not have its own retail or restaurant scenes, it’s precisely its immersion in the Virginia countryside that contributes to its historic and naturalistic appeals.
Boating and battlefield hikes in Sutherland
Lake Chesdin, which forms Sutherland’s northern border, is one of Dinwiddie and Chesterfield counties’ main recreational attractions. “This lake was manmade back in the early 1960s; it used to be just the Appomattox River running through there,” Patsel says. “People love the lake down there, and you can ski, kneeboard, tube and ride kayaks and jetskis. There are plenty of places to park your boat and enjoy little beach areas long the lake.” Those who prefer to stay on land can still make use of the lake’s scenery for their outdoor outings. “There are campgrounds where you can go and pop a tent, stuff like that,” Patsel says. “There used to be a 170-acre campground called the ‘Leonards Campground’ before the family sold it. They put Riverside Vines out there, and there are now several wedding venues out that way.” History buffs and everyday hikers often visit the Five Forks Battlefield to explore nearly 7 miles of trails cutting through pine woods. Interpretive signs tell the story of one of the last major battles of the American Civil War, fought in April 1865. The nearby Pamplin Historical Park, the site of another climactic action that same month, regularly offers hands-on living history demonstrations to school groups while also making a large section of the Petersburg battlefield open for wooded strolls.
Homes get more expensive closer to Lake Chesdin
Due to its rural location, Sutherland consists of a scattering of residences that vary from waterfront properties to inland ranch-style and Cape Cod-influenced homes. Most of Sutherland’s houses are single-story buildings constructed between the 1960s and 2020s, and they have sold for between $230,000 and $525,000. However, homes along the lakefront can sell for significantly more; one recently sold single-story property along the lake recently sold for $850,000. Homes continue to be built as Dinwiddie County grows in popularity as a Richmond-Petersburg exurb. “The biggest thing are the taxes; the taxes are so much less than in other counties and cities,” Patsel says. “You pay up to $1,800 less in taxes here than in Chesterfield County on the other side of the lake.” Sutherland also has a minimal risk of crime, as indicated by its CAP Index Crime Score of 1.
Dinwiddie County schools partner with Richard Bland College
Students can start their education at Sutherland Elementary School, which receives a B-minus rating from Niche, before attending the C-plus-rated Dinwiddie County Middle School and the B-minus-rated Dinwiddie High School. Dinwiddie High offers a dual enrollment program with Richard Bland College, enabling students to earn credit in fields as diverse as business and visual arts.
Restaurants and supermarkets are not far from rural Sutherland
Though Sutherland doesn’t have a downtown shopping area of its own, restaurants and supermarkets aren’t hard to find. Food Lion and Produce Center are just 6 miles away on the western outskirts of Petersburg. Just beyond Sutherland’s eastern boundaries, Corner Market BBQ sells pulled pork, wings and other barbecue specialties every weekend. The neighboring El Caporal Mexican Restaurant immerses diners in a colorful, traditional Mexican atmosphere while serving culinary staples like tacos and arroz con pollo. Boaters can launch their craft from the Lake Chesdin Boat Ramp and dock at The Landing Grill on the north bank of the lake. This small restaurant offers burgers, beer and boating snacks to visitors as they take in the views of the marina and lake from a nautically themed dining room.
Easy access to major cities via Route 460
Sutherland’s location along U.S. Route 460 connects it to Petersburg within a 10-mile drive, while Richmond is a 35-mile journey up Interstate 95. Sutherland has its own family practice clinic, while Bon Secours’ Southside Medical Center, a 15-mile drive into Petersburg, is the closest emergency room.
