Wilsons offers privacy and rural living 15 miles outside Blackstone
One road runs through Wilsons in Dinwiddie County; it’s U.S. Route 460, and the only things along it are farms, churches, a few homes, a gas station and a post office. “People move to Wilsons for privacy, peace and quiet,” says Rhonda Gay, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “It’s very, very rural; people there own lots of acreage.” Wilsons is fairly remote, just over 50 miles from Richmond and 30 miles from Petersburg. The closest place to grab groceries is about 10 miles away in Blackstone, a military town by Fort Barfoot.
Historic homes and a smattering of newly built properties
The median price of homes in Wilsons is roughly $300,000. Sales data is limited since properties here are rarely listed. The neighborhood features many historic residences, like Colonial Revivals and farmhouses built in the early 1900s. Newer homes crop up every so often, typically adhering to classic designs similar to those of the historic properties.
About a 20-mile drive from K-12 education
“Kids in Wilsons have a longer bus ride,” Gay says. The neighborhood is served by Dinwiddie County Public Schools. Sunnyside Elementary earns a B on Niche and is just under a 20-mile drive from the neighborhood. Dinwiddie Middle, graded C-plus, and Dinwiddie High, graded B-minus, are also about a 20-mile drive away. The high school features career and technical education courses for trades like cosmetology, automotive technology, carpentry, masonry, HVAC and more.
The nearest park and nearby lakes for boating and fishing
Seay Park in Blackstone is the closest public park, and the town does tree lightings there every holiday season. North of Blackstone, about 12 miles from Wilsons, local anglers can fish on Nottoway Lake. Another local spot for fishing and boating is the Pickett Reservoir, south of Blackstone and a little over 15 miles from Wilsons.
Richlands Creamy, grocery stores and more in nearby Blackstone
When residents drive to Blackstone for errand runs or a bite to eat, they’ll pass the main attraction around these parts – Richlands Creamery. The third-generation dairy farm is family-owned and offers tours in the summer and spring. Visitors can see how the farm’s roughly 500 cows are cared for, where they rest and where they’re born. The farm store sells goods from various local farms, such as Goodwin Family Farm’s fruit jams and Mardelian Farm’s goat milk soap. A couple miles down the road, Blackstone’s Main Street is lined with locally owned businesses like American eateries Farmers Cafe and Mitchell’s Restaurant and Lounge. Walmart and Food Lion are on the town’s south side.
Residents are more than a half-hour drive from the nearest hospitals
Three emergency rooms are between a 30- and 45-minute drive from Wilsons, the closest being at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, about 33 miles east. Swift Creek ER is around 30 miles north, and Sentra Southside Community Hospital is closer to 40 miles west. U.S. 460 is a direct route to Petersburg, where it intersects Interstate 95, a straight shot into Richmond’s downtown, over 50 miles from Wilsons. Richmond International Airport is closer to 60 miles away.
